What movies are you watching?

Watched 'Vacation' and 'Kingsman: the Secret Service" recently.

Vacation was terrible. I mean, there were a few funny moments, but overall, just a terrible movie. 1 star. Ed Helms played the same guy he always plays (Andy Bernard), and he's just not dynamic enough to be a lead.

Kingsman was kinda fun. Not great, and way over the top, but entertaining. I'd give it 3 stars, and if you have HBO (currently available there), I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.

that's really weird...i just realized cat power was in my dream last night...all i can remember is i was sitting in a movie theater and there was a commercial or something before the previews with a clip from a video of hers...i remember thinking, i haven't listened to her as much as i should (which is true)

Sicario.

It was fine. Cool action shots, some good tension..but i didnt loved it. Benicio Del Toro was pretty awesome.

Today I watched The Big Short and Room (catching up on this past year's films; just a few left, really). The Big Short was alright, although not as minute-to-minute engrossing as Spotlight. I know the tone and the composition of the two are very different, but in the end they're both procedurals that try to make a very complex situation palpable (and to expose corruption at the highest level). I felt like I didn't have anyone to root for, though.

Then there's The Room, which I liked quite a bit. Good understated performances throughout (and big bursts of drama and movement when they were necessary), and lots of memorable visuals. When it comes to stuff that belongs in a spoiler tag:

I knew what the film was about before seeing it, and now I definitely wish I hadn't. It's not like it was kept a secret for more than 10 minutes, but when it's marketed as a film about "readjustment" then you know they're going to get out. Still, a nice switcheroo with how the "climax" passes less than halfway through. One thing I'm glad they didn't dwell on too, too much was the matter of Jack being the rapist's son--I thought it was handled deftly in the dinner scene by William H. Macy (man crush) and I wish they hadn't pressed it so hard during the TV interview segment. The return to the room was almost a bit much for me, but since the boy character had been so attached to objects and things throughout the entire run, it made sense for him to reach a sense of closure by figuring out that it was just another room, not "Room."

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I was moved by the easy-going, subdued kindness shown by Joy's mother's boyfriend (husband?). Leo, I think his name was. It's easy to read overflowing examples of bravery, innocence, and love in the other characters--hey, it's a movie, after all--but the little things Leo does to demonstrate that he's a particularly good person doesn't remind me of anything I've seen in movies recently.

I think the movie did a good job of introducing some claustrophobia in Ma's childhood home once they got there--the media scrambling at the door, the fenced-in back yard, the sunken living room (split level houses have always skeeved me out, for some reason), and, of course, the tiny bathroom where Joy tries to off herself. The great dinner scene is also "stifling" in another sense. That's why I thought the return to room was important: yes, it was his whole world and very tiny, but the world is full of tiny spaces where we feel cut off and suffocated--when he realizes room was just another one of those (x 1,000,000) I think we're supposed to feel relief that he'll be able to adjust better in the future.

I just watched Rick Alverson's Entertainment and I think it changed my life. Best movie of 2015, and one of the best movies I've ever seen. He's probably the most important filmmaker in the world right now.
