None of the bad review blurbs make me not wanna see it. Too much action and not funny enough doesn't sound horrible.

Yeah, but it also has a higher score than "The Great Gatsby", which you loved. That should tell you how much you should pay attention to review aggregators.durdencommatyler wrote:1- It has a LOWER rating that Superman Returns, even among "Top Critics."theplatypus wrote:1- That is not that bad a score. Shit'll still make coin. And I'm sure Sequel Town is already being blueprinted. But, still... 55 on Metacritic.
2- Why would Warner care about critical reception? This will be a blockbuster hit regardless.
2- That's why I said it ultimately doesn't really matter. I would just suspect that they'd prefer to have critical praise to go along with their money, much like their recent Batman run. I'm sure they'll take the money if they can only have one. But the critical acclaim lends the whole thing some weight and credence. Especially for people like me who don't really give a shit about this thing. If it was tearing it up critically, I MIGHT be swayed to spend the money. As it stands, I just couldn't care less.

It's the stuff about lack of character and an inability to make one care, and the sloppy and useless portrayal of women in the film has me most turned off. "Not funny enough" is meaningless to me, too. And it's Superman! I WANT action. But I also want to care. And since it's hard to care about Superman, himself, because he's basically invincible, I want to really care about the humans around him. And some of the stuff I've read implies that all that stuff is all but forgotten.

That's a damn fine point, Mr. Puss. I don't put much stock in critics. Except when I'm on the fence after watching the previews. Then I tend to listen a little closer. And it isn't the professionals that sway me, but the regular folk. And I'm seeing a lot of underwhelmed regular folk.theplatypus wrote:Yeah, but it also has a higher score than "The Great Gatsby", which you loved. But, yes. I should see it for myself and decide. And I will, eventually. I'm just not sure I'm ready to spend movie theater prices to see it.

All this about the final act does make me kind of nervous.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
The degree to which critic input is useful usually depends on the type of movie. Summer blockbusters have a tendency to be a bit samey and to take very silly shortcuts because, hey, we made lots of explosions and you're a fucking idiot so here's your movie. I'd say an action flick that scores a 60% is a lot less likely to find me coming out of the theater thinking positive thoughts about it than a comedy or dramatic work with the same score.

Something I've read elsewhere: it almost seems that the reviewers are taking this chance to 'bash' on superhero movies since they're getting sick of them.

Who you kidding? You'll be fine. You've already decided whether you'll like this movie or not.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
I read it more as "Well, there's been a shit ton of these, now...some good, some terrible...so we can now easily express our opinion of new superhero movies almost exclusively by comparing them to previous superhero movies." Calling a movie an "unremarkable superhero movie" isn't dissing superhero movies...it's dissing unremarkable movies. It's saying 'compared to similarly themed movies, this one is unremarkable.'bune wrote:Something I've read elsewhere: it almost seems that the reviewers are taking this chance to 'bash' on superhero movies since they're getting sick of them.
And, frankly, when there are SO MANY of these fucking things showing up, you do have to be a little better and a little move inventive if you want to stand out in any way whatsoever.

Is two Superhero movies every year really that many? Didn't they used to put out 30 or 40 westerns a year?

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
Honestly, the "complaint" about superhero films and/or the frequency thereof is more "hipster" than anything else.
There's plenty of room for superhero films. It's a viable, interesting and marketable genre. Whether Man of Steel helps or hinders that genre is yet to be seen. But, yeah, we're far from capacity.
