I mean I love Hail Hail but it has no business beating Tremor Christ.

I've never heard this about Vitalogy.
Pretty much what everyone said until Binaural came out.
To be fair, "they" said this about every album from Vitalogy through Riot Act.
Nobody ever said that about yield. That's the album that coined 'return to form'
Yep.

I actually don't remember hearing that much for Riot Act either. Just a lot of people disliking it, not that it was the band's least accessible.

But I remember, living in KC, going to see Pearl Jam in 98, dudes were discussing their favorite albums in the parking lot. Time and time again you'd hear people say, "Vitalogy is the best because its' the weirdest one." And you'd inevitably hear a reply like, "Dude, yeah, that record is too weird. It doesn't work. Ten's clearly the best."

I got into PJ when "Vitalogy" was their newest album, and it definitely had the reputation as being "the weird one." At the time I think it was just a law of averages thing -- the first two albums were lean mean rock-and-roll machines, and "Vitalogy" was mostly that, just with a few wanky tracks that offset the momentum. Once "No Code" came around, I think their baseline quirkiness went up a few notches in the eyes of the general public, though most objections to it at the time were simply that it was lame and wimpy.

Once "Binaural" dropped, all bets were off. At that point most sensible people had stopped wrestling with the dilemma of how to process Pearl Jam albums.

Hail, Hail is the only song left in this thing that I'd be happy to see win.

Wait, we just found a glitch with the poll system. We're gonna have to start all over again.
