On tipping

No, 20-25% is not the new normal. It isn't my fault those on the wait staff made terrible choices in life.

For exceptional service, yeah. But it shouldnt be the standard. It's not my fault you have made sitting me at a table. bringing my food and filling my soda a 4 person job.

20%+ exceptional service
15% normal, good service
10% not good service
0% if you're awful.

My general rule is to start at 20% and move up or down, depending on service level and my charitable mood.

Well, my apologies, industrious young millennial! I too regret that refilling my water has inconvenienced your eight-hour smoke break. As a token of my appreciation for your having done the absolute minimum to complement my dining experience, allow me to increase the minimum with which I compensate you for your entirely unremarkable service!

fuckin' 20-somethings, amirite?

srsly though - I'll tip 20% if the waiter/waitress is sociable and efficient and doesn't irritate the hell out of me by coming over to my table every six minutes to find out if everything's ok.

We are about the same, 20% is where we start, though we very rarely have service that prompts more then that, and i don't know the norm for a buffet where all the do is refills on drinks, but i normally only tip a buck a person(2 when i get together with some friends and we hang out and talk for an hour and a half or so)

It's supposed to be 15-20% baseline for sitdown meal, 10% baseline for buffets.

How much is one expected to tip delivery guys? This is one I've struggled with. I always end up overtipping.

What's the rule for Peapod deliveries, do you tip the person? My friend's wife uses it all the time and he says he has no idea if he's supposed to tip them. I said he should probably tip the guy. He said the guy doesn't mill around like he's looking for a tip and there's not spot on the receipt to give a tip, so he doesn't.

Nah, just a Chinese/Japanese buffet when we get together to talk a little fantasy football and various family drama. Though we are changing it over to a poker night next time we get together

10% for buffets? I must be a dick. I don't tip at the buffet.
