1-2: Superman vs. Zither

I don't really care for Zither. It's just something I need to be over so I can listen to So Fast So Numb, and it disrupts the flow of the album for me.

Superman is such a wonderful cover I never really appreciated until my fandom was well into its second decade. It's a great example of the playful side of the band.

I really like Zither. It's raw and direct. I love that it was recorded during a soundcheck, which makes it very unique in the REM catalogue. I like the Superman cover, but I put it up there with Shiny Happy People and Stand -- pretty trite and nothing particularly stands out. Plus, I tend to shy away from Mike Mills songs.

Zither takes it for me.

i like zither (and a majority of r.e.m. instrumentals to be honest), but one listen to the vocal harmonies on superman and my vote was obvious.
