I really like stand (I enjoy most of the goofy bubblegum REM songs) and it has that wonderful backwards guitar solo, but Alligator... has such marvelous off the wall energy that a band just shouldn't be able to capture 15 albums and 30 years into a career.

Alligator...

i can't in good conscience vote for stand. maybe there are some songs i would choose stand over, but alligator isn't one of them.

"Stand" is trite, sure, but it also contains a sense of craftsmanship that they rarely achieved elsewhere. I like it a lot more than "Alligator."

Pretty much everything on Green displays a deep sense of craftsmanship that is difficult to find on the late albums.

i do like that they specifically went to make a unabashedly poppy song like this - buck called it the 'stupidest song we've ever written, but that's not a bad thing' - and that they very much succeeded in doing just that. it could have been a disaster, for sure, but they showed they could pull it off and not look terrible doing it.

I think Alligator is one of the best songs on that album. Stand is just too silly to ever take seriously.

I absolutely adore everything about Stand. It might be one of my favorite things this band has done.

Hmmm, "Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter" is one of my favorite later REM songs but Stand is so unbelievably charming. Sad vote Stand.
