I didn't end up going. Randall did. This is his review.

'Thurstons new act...basically, it's Soundgarden with Jim Carroll singing. Dropped D tunings, weird time sigs and tempo changes, lots of guitar noise, and Thurston's York accent singing. Fucking brilliant!'

I'm surprised by how much I like "D'yer Ma'ker" considering my general dislike of reggae.

Strange favor: The used copy of "EVOL" I ordered showed up today with no back cover--just the disc and the booklet. Would someone who owns the physical CD of this album be willing to scan the back tray insert and email it to me? Shoot me a PM if you can help.

Thanks in advance.

I really liked both of these--on first listen I think I might like "EVOL" even better than "Sister," which I really like but hasn't transcended that sweet spot the way some of SY's other albums have. I would probably rate every Kim song on "EVOL" among her best.

And I'm not sure if the indistinct wash of guitar on the Smart Bar album is characteristic of their sound at the time or just a product of the below average quality of the tape, or both, but in any case I really like how it redirects the focus to Steve Shelley's drums. This album is just a merciless sonic pummeling--the further I get back into their catalog the more I find myself noticing how they fit into the lineage of free jazz and much of the improvisational music conceived in its wake.

I feel as though I've posted this before, but who cares:

Oh, definitely. When Kim and Steve come thundering in on DV69, it's like being hit by a truck.

Listened to "Experimental Jet Set" today for about the fifth time--probably a lower-tier Sonic Youth album for me, though I really love "Winner's Blues," "Bone," and "Sweet Shine."

I love it too, and definitely don't think it's "lower tier" at all. In fact, I think I like it more than Daydream Nation. Yeah, that's right, I said it.

Although, I've been all about "Rain King" lately.

One of my least favourite SY records - no Lee songs! - but I may give it a spin soon, it's been quite some time.

I don't think there's been a SY record that I've flat-out disliked yet, and I'm getting pretty close to the end of their discography. So "lower tier" is relative, of course, and I do think the absence of a single Lee song upsets the balance for me a little. This is probably Thurston's weakest album for me--as someone who thinks Thurston is kind of SY's melodic conscience, a lot of his "Jet Set" tracks have this feigned snarl that just doesn't hit home with me.

Maybe..Lee was having different kinds of trouble with Thurston and Kim around that time, and didnt quite write much material. I remember he also did some solo shows too, including one in Argentina in a little place called Cemento i think.
Weird to think about those years, SY around that time were recording for a mayor label and also doing some beautiful and weird music.

I miss them.

I like that one pretty well too. That and "Winner" are my favorite Thurston tunes on the album.

"Winner's Blues" has a Pavementy vibe to it, to these ears.

Totally has a Pavement vibe. "Screaming Skull" is another favorite of mine off that album.

Oh, and I don't know if I ever mentioned this, but I love Steve Shelly as a drummer almost as much as I do Jack Irons.

Steve Shelly is one of the best drummers from all times. Period.

His work outside SY is cool too...listen to the record he made with Cat Power.
