What are you currently watching on TV?

I watched the first two episodes of Deadwood last night. I'd never seen it before. It's been on my list for so long, I was glad to finally get a chance to sit down and give it a go. While it's certainly a competent show, and many aspects are very good, including some of the performances (Ian McShane, I'm looking at you), I'm not sure I get why people love it so much.

Does it get better? Is it like Mad Men? Do I need to give it five or six episodes before it clicks? I don't dislike it by any stretch, but I'm not seeing anything that puts it in the "best of all time" category like so many others have said before. I'm not going to quit it yet, but I'm just wondering if it's just me or if the show gets better.

it was more groundbreaking or whatever when it came out; there was nothing else like it on tv then. it's very influential.

What were the individual elements that compose great TV that people latched on to with Deadwood? What did/does Deadwood do better than any of its contemporaries. Keep in mind I haven't seen a lot of the other "groundbreaking" shows that people reference like The Sopranos and The Wire or even some things that may be borrowing from Deadwood like Boardwalk Empire or Hell on Wheels.

I don't know if Deadwood is the best show of all time but its certainly my favorite show ever.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I've never seen a moment of Deadwood, but one of my friends loves it, and he says it's primarily the dialogue. That's definitely a big part of the appeal with The Wire and The Sopranos -- characters that feel so real because they actually talk like real people, and have conversations that are complicated and require you to pay attention. I gather Deadwood does something more ambitious/lyrical, but I think it's a similar thing -- writing that respects the viewer's intelligence.

Ah. Interesting. Yeah, I can see that. If it was one of the first shows that really did that, then yeah, that's groundbreaking. The dialogue is really solid in Deadwood, for sure. But it also makes sense that it isn't as standout to me today as it would have been in real time when it originally aired.

Ill be honest. I was underwhelmed by Deadwood. I didn't hate it by any stretch, and some of the performances were very good (mcshane, dickens). The first half of the first season was ok. The second half of season 1 and season 2 were almost great, and season 3 was an absolute cluster fuck- and I dont think an ending would have changed that at all.

Deadwood was a good show (and not all that ground breaking from a content standpoint. The immersive nature of the set was impressive obviously, and has probably has allowed for shows like Game of Thrones, etc as it showed the value of that realistic feel to a large scale show) but is pretty massively overrated. Hell, even McShane's schtick started to get somewhat old for me toward the end. This show isn't on the same level as The Sopranos (which ive pointed out is pretty flawed to me as well), much less the level of the Wire.

The worst part for me was I was so wanting to love it. And for a big chunk of season 2 I did. But it became such a mess so fast in season 3. It might be the most let down I have ever been by a television show.

That doesn't make any sense. If they knew it wasn't being renewed, they wouldn't have left it so unended. If they Didnt know, then it wouldn't be rushed.
