Re: Movie: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Also, while I normally would agree with you on this, Platy, it is hard to read whites stuff and not believe he is being contrarian, especially as the reviews I've read thus far set themselves up as repudiations of widely held opinions possessed by stupid people, rather than his own opinion that happens to be different.
It's not that white seems to defend a perspective perhaps idiosyncratic to him. It's that everyone else is wrong for not sharing it.
I presume I am not the only person reading that into his work

Re: Movie: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
saw a noon showing. in short i came away thinking this could have been much worse, but it could have been much better. it's a movie trying to do too much- setting the table for a franchise, first and foremost- and it suffers for it. it does have its share of good moments and sequences- the actual batman v. superman fight was a highlight of the film- but ultimately it feels too bloated and not as fun as it should have been. it's not 'fun' at all, really, and there was virtually no laughs- arguably the funniest part was batfleck saying 'shit'. even the nolan batman movies had some well placed humor.
it's hard to say i'm disappointed by batman v. superman, but it was a bit of a let down. the 30% rotten tomatoes rating seems way too low, and the 7.7 imdb rating is probably a bit higher than i'd give it. a 7 or C grade seems reasonable to me.
that 'sound of silence' affleck/cavill interview video posted earlier, though, is goddamned hilarious. a++++ would watch again and again.

I know you said you havent read the review yet, LV, but the very first sentence has him railing against fanboys and using the phrase 'the masses.' In the same sentence. The first sentence

Re: Movie: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
It's very difficult to read what I've seen of white (maybe this is only his event film reviews) and not imagine that he is at least subconsciously motivated on part by a desire to repudiate whatever the popular opinion happens to be, so as to demonstrate his own superiority by standing apart from it.
That is not to say one can only like BVS for those reasons. Obviously that's nonsense. And clearly this guy is into snyders aesthetic, but that isn't what seems to be motivating his review.
Unnecessary shots at marvel, the masses, and fanboys make that clear. He isn't writing as much as he is judging

Stip: For the record - I dont think there is a problem with that at all. I just find it humorous as to how much of a thing....this is to you. Its like your RM shtick and its great. Im the same way when it comes to reviews and ultimately all these bad reviews just reinforce my preconceived ideas about the film, which is probably a bad thing.
I am looking forward to seeing batfleck though. The good reviews about him intrigue me. The rest of the reviews seem to hit exactly the way i was feeling just learning about the film.
Ultimately, I will watch it and probably have some fun and forget about it. Im not too invested in Superman nor Snyder though so its really not much of an issue.

I'm still kind of floored that Platy bit my head off about Arnold White

He's a mess right now. The movie really fucked with his head. He knows its terrible but is upset he had to dumb down his intelligence to find some entertainment value for the money he paid.stip wrote:I'm still kind of floored that Platy bit my head off about Arnold White

Can somebody really not enjoy this type of movie though? Even the slightest bit of enjoyment could be had considering its two iconic characters that we all have loved in one way or another.bada wrote:Platy kinda liking it is the only thing keeping me afloat.

Re: Movie: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
White has been writing art/cultural criticism for decades. His ideology and what he values in art are distinct and coherent. Always have been. I don't think it's at all surprising that a gay black Christian conservative has a radically different viewpoint than other film critics, who tend to be white liberals. He is naturally positioned differently, not deliberately.stip wrote:It's very difficult to read what I've seen of white (maybe this is only his event film reviews) and not imagine that he is at least subconsciously motivated on part by a desire to repudiate whatever the popular opinion happens to be, so as to demonstrate his own superiority by standing apart from it.

yeah, that got a chuckle, too. i think alfred had a good line as well (jeremy irons is great as alfred, btw), but i'm not sure there was anything else that got even a smirk.theplatypus wrote:AndySlash wrote:arguably the funniest part was batfleck saying 'shit'. even the nolan batman movies had some well placed humor.
