Re: Grateful Dead
Any high hopes I had for this project were dashed after hearing that Touch of Grey cover. I already knew WoD were boring, but holy shit that was bad.
Still holding out for the Bonnie and Lee Ranaldo covers.
Has there ever been a GD cover that has surpassed the original?

Re: Grateful Dead
Ever heard Bonnie Prince Billy's "Brokedown Palace?" It doesn't surpass the original, but it deserves to exist.
I wish Vijay Iyer was doing something other than "King Solomon's Marbles," he's one of my favorites right now. I'll be interested to see what Bill Callahan does with "Easy Wind," and The Tallest Man on Earth with "Ship of Fools."

Re: Grateful Dead
I'm excited that there's a new Bill Callahan recording here. I'm not a huge GD fan, so anything that's passably fun is gravy for me.

Re: Grateful Dead
Listening to this for the first time -- and I agree! I love the '60's pop production value -- you definitely wouldn't hear this and expect the Dead to become the live band they'd become. The prominence of Pigpen's organ seems unique to this record, and Garcia's soloing is crisp and in the foreground -- very "live" sounding. I also like that Jerry is credited as "Captain Trips." The '60's were weird.darth_vedder wrote:I was pleasantly surprised with the debut. I don't hear it mentioned too often as a "must have", but I'm glad I got it. There are some really good tunes there.

Re: Grateful Dead
I pre-ordered the Day of the Dead, and I can only name one Grateful Dead song. This should be an interesting introduction to the band.

The jam coming out of "Comes A Time" is improvisational music of the finest vintage -- one of those moments where you find yourself thinking, "Wow, I didn't know this song could go to these places."

Yeah, I was totally blown away at how good this Red Rocks show sounded. I remember trying to check it out years ago, but it never clicked. It must of been a shitty source or something, cause this set kinda rules. And yes, DP18 is very good too.
I'm coming around to 1978

Re: Grateful Dead
It's not awful, you can trim this set down to one, two discs tops. But hey its Dead related, youre gonna get some bloat.
Easy Wind is great. And I'm surprised how much I enjoy the Playing with Lee and that chooch from TVoR.

Re: Grateful Dead
I like Kurt Vile's "Box of Rain" and Courtney Barnett's "New Speedway Boogie." Bonnie's songs are okay, but pretty straight. Tallest Man on Earth's "Ship of Fools" is shit.
A lot of these songs just don't survive the aesthetic conversion that most of these artists impose on them. You gotta meet a cover song halfway, and for a lot of these artists it just seems like more than they're prepared to do.

Re: Grateful Dead
Yeah, that Callahan track is gorgeous. I'm not a huge Dead fan, so I'm really only in it for the artists I like. They released LP details today and I'm not even a little tempted.
