Colorado has kind of crappy alcohol related laws.

Don't get me started. :(

When I got pulled over driving drunk, I was wearing a grass skirt and oversized sunglasses, doing 15 miles an hour with my lights off at three in the morning.

They drove me home and parked my car on a side street for me.

I know. But I was 22, and it was something like a ten block drive.

I slid on ice coming down from my friends house at 8 in the PM. hit the curb and my tire blew off the rim. I pulled over on a side street and prepared to put on the spare. A cop drove by. Offered to take a look and help me get it up on the jack. Asked if Id been drinking. Next thing I know there are two state troopers and im cuffed. DWAI. Under the legal limit but over the limit where they can arrest you and put you in the system.

Court tomorrow. So hopefully tomorrow this is the end of it. Been in alcohol education classes the past three months.

ha similar thing happened to me, minus the skirt and glasses, plus going the wrong way on a one way street. I still cant believe I didn't go to jail.

Colorado (and maybe California) have a "DWAI" law...

Driving while ability impaired. This is a Blood Alcohol Level of .05-.079. It is essential the same thing as a DUI (.08 or greater) but the fines and possible jail time is much lower. What sucks is .05 can be 1-2 drinks depending on various circumstances. The country will be, at some point, making .05 the legal limit. This will in turn make criminals out of a majority of the population.

It's been 0.05 here for many years.

Random breath testing too, which Americans seem to usually go apeshit over whenever I see it brought up online. The police set up a road stop and pull over every driver for a breath test.

Yea, they cite Europe as an example. Unfortunately, the US public transportation is pretty weak.

We have some pretty poor public transit here too.

I don't really have time right now to look into, but I don't think that's true. You'd need to look at the data and see what practical benefits there would be in lowering it further and whether they're really significant.

My arguments are mostly emotional (big surprise) but yea - I dont think lowering it will decrease any of the fatal accident statistics. It is just difficult to tell someone on the MADD panel that lowering it will cramp your style....

It is also a major major source of cash for the Gov't. It is pretty laughable at all the things I need to pay for and do right now for this ridiculous incident.

And it may ruin many local establishments (restauratns/bars) and living up in a major tourist destination town where our entire economy is ran on such establishments....

The buses stop running here around Midnight or so. Many of the local bar owners/workers have complained (rightfully so) for years about that. The people that are running their town can't e ven catch a ride home after they are done closing up shop. A cab ride from Vail to Edwards (15 miles or so) runs about $80....

Pretty much sounds like where I live too.

I do think there's probably diminishing returns once you keep lowering the blood alcohol limit - it seems driven by wowserism more than empirical analysis (though, hey, I might be wrong.)

I had two drinks at an after-work function last week and pretty much shat bricks the entire drive home that I'd turn a corner and find a random breath test.

Ill be purchasing a breathalyzer for my car. It will stay in there at all times. Im not worried about getting shitfaced and driving home because i dont do that. If im going out ill cab it. its fine. I am more concerned about the beer over dinner with the family and for those instances I will not be starting my car until the breathalyzer shows im well under .05
