Re: 1-39: Revolution vs Final Straw
Final Straw captures perfectly the sad resignation of the American left circa 2003-2004. A great anthem that manages to shout it's message without ever raising its voice.
Revolution was fantastic on the Monster tour, but the version they recorded just sucks. It's amazing how little energy they managed to transfer to the studio take

The studio version of "Revolution" was a silly idea, yeah.

Re: 1-39: Revolution vs Final Straw
this is an unfortunate matchup. i like revolution a lot, and i speak primarily of the studio cut though i also enjoy the live takes from 'road movie' and show recordings. i certainly can see the 'no energy' argument for the studio version- stipe chooses to recite the lyrics with all the excitement of a senate hearing on c-span, so he clearly didn't appear to be feeling it that day. but i guess that just doesn't bother me in this case. i want to vote for revolution very much. but i can't, not against final straw. when that song came out- they dropped a 'rough mix' on the net in march, 2003 and if anyone still has that version hook me up, i seem to have lost it- i played that one on repeat many times. unlike revolution where i go to the 'album' version for my fix, my primary go-to version of final straw is the take that appeared on the 'future soundtrack for america' in 2004 and was labeled as the 'move-on mix'.
it's more percussive/propulsive and less lush sounding than the album take, but even that version still ends up being the best thing on around the sun. final straw is one of their best songs post-berry, and it gets my vote over revolution in a really tough contest for me.

Here we goooooo!!!
edit: Damn, these are both really great songs. I felt like I was waiting for both of them to really take off at some point, but neither of them ever really do, I like that. I don't know how to vote here.

Never heard either of these before. Definitely giving it to Final Straw.
