For what it's worth, Paul Banks has addressed this before, and said that it was never intended to be an aesthetic choice - they all were just NYC metrosexuals who always wore dress clothes.

i got no probs if someone wants to blantantly make a living playing music. obviously, i'd prefer some sort of punk rock, DIY, stick-to-your-guns ethos to be attached to it, but ultimately if it's something I enjoy, i'm all good.
