I don't think "maxed power levels, intergalactic super villains and Krypto" equal "really fun and playful and almost tongue-in-cheek." I also don't think the best parts of the Raimi Spider-Man movies were the fun, playful, almost tongue-in-cheek parts.Kaius wrote:Re: trag---Although i do not share your contempt for BvS, I am very much interested in a Silver Age take on the big screen; complete with maxed power levels, intergalactic super villains and Krypto the dog.

I think the tone of those elements are precisely those things. Do you think a powered up super dog that assists his planet-tossing owner against inter dimensional gobbledygook is supposed to be taken seriously?

Re: Movie: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
I guess I was thinking more along the lines of DC's Final Crisis event from 2008. It has all sorts of crazy shit, and I'd say it's to be taken pretty seriously.Kaius wrote:I think the tone of those elements are precisely those things. Or even Crisis on Infinite Earths from 1985-86.

Not exactly lighthearted, playful, and tongue-in-cheek.
edit: sorry big pictures

Crisis on infinite earths was (I believe) at the tail end of the era. It really is not at all the same tone the series carried in the Silver Age heyday of the 60s and 70s. Final Crisis isn't even in the same ball park, though I would adore more screen adaptations of Grant Morrison's work.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Did you like Superman Returns?tragabigzanda wrote:Kaius gets it, plus you guys know way more about the history of Superman than I do. But yea -- "Krypto the dog" sounds fun and zany and and like it could make for great throwback camp if done really well.

Interesting; I would have thought, given that movie's direct lineage of the Donner movies, it would have been more in line with what you wanted.tragabigzanda wrote:Hated it, but I think Singer is a consistently shitty director, with the exception of Usual Suspects (Apt Pupil didn't suck either). I like Superman Returns and Singer's first X-Men movie a lot, but I can totally see what you mean about his "lifelessness." That's how I feel about Gore Verbinski.

I've only seen Superman Returns once, but I remember thinking it was pretty good. I should watch it again.

I haven't seen Superman Returns since it was in theaters. I feel like it was underwhelming, but not bad.

I've never been able to put my finger on exactly what it is, but all of his movies have a uniquely soulless quality. It's so bizarrely lifeless and off-putting that it borders on auteurist idiosyncrasy.tragabigzanda wrote:Totally! Verbinski does have a similar look, huh?LoathedVermin72 wrote:Interesting; I would have thought, given that movie's direct lineage of the Donner movies, it would have been more in line with what you wanted.tragabigzanda wrote:Hated it, but I think Singer is a consistently shitty director, with the exception of Usual Suspects (Apt Pupil didn't suck either). I really don't mean anything positive by that, in case that came off like a good thing.

Tony Scott seemed to go fucking nuts with his style after 2000. His movies became, like, cocaine-fueled acid trips or something. I really can't figure out how I feel about him.tragabigzanda wrote:LV -- Tony Scott's later stuff had a similar lifeless look too. Something in his gear or technique changed around 2000.

Wife and I stumbled across the first Reeves Superman while high last weekend. When he spun around the earth, she declared, "Fuck this. Fuck superman."
Fair.
Fair.
