I don't think "maxed power levels, intergalactic super villains and Krypto" equal "really fun and playful and almost tongue-in-cheek." I also don't think the best parts of the Raimi Spider-Man movies were the fun, playful, almost tongue-in-cheek parts.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of DC's Final Crisis event from 2008. It has all sorts of crazy shit, and I'd say it's to be taken pretty seriously.



Or even Crisis on Infinite Earths from 1985-86.

Crisis on infinite earths was (I believe) at the tail end of the era. It really is not at all the same tone the series carried in the Silver Age heyday of the 60s and 70s. Final Crisis isn't even in the same ball park, though I would adore more screen adaptations of Grant Morrison's work.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. Hated it, but I think Singer is a consistently shitty director, with the exception of Usual Suspects (Apt Pupil didn't suck either). His movies just look so flat and lifeless to me, and Superman Returns was no exception. There were other problems I had with it, but that's the primary one.

Interesting; I would have thought, given that movie's direct lineage of the Donner movies, it would have been more in line with what you wanted.

I like Superman Returns and Singer's first X-Men movie a lot, but I can totally see what you mean about his "lifelessness." That's how I feel about Gore Verbinski.

Totally! Verbinski does have a similar look, huh?

I've never been able to put my finger on exactly what it is, but all of his movies have a uniquely soulless quality. It's so bizarrely lifeless and off-putting that it borders on auteurist idiosyncrasy.

I really don't mean anything positive by that, in case that came off like a good thing.

LV -- Tony Scott's later stuff had a similar lifeless look too. Something in his gear or technique changed around 2000.

Tony Scott seemed to go fucking nuts with his style after 2000. His movies became, like, cocaine-fueled acid trips or something. I really can't figure out how I feel about him.
