Volver (dir. Pedro Almodovar)

This was highly refreshing. "Spanish surrealist mystery" is the best description I can come up with.

Visually beautiful. It's so fun to watch the way he plays with colors. I also love how the film's narrative doesn't follow conventional structure; it just flies all over the place. I've just read that the narrative style is inspired by a whole bunch of Italian cinema about which I know next-to-nothing; and that this film in particular was first used as a plot device in one of the director's own earlier films.

The only other Almodovar film I've seen is Talk To Her, and I don't know that I could appreciate that in 2002 the same way I could get into this. But I loved this. It was colorful and challenging and passionate and heady and weird. A couple parts fell flat, but I suspect that has more to do with my lack of contextual understanding for Almodovar's work than it does his technique, as the man clearly knows what he's doing.

I know you hate it when I do this but...

Almodovar is one of my absolute favorites.

What other works by him are must-see?

Broken Embraces and All About My Mother are absolute musts. You should also revisit Talk to Her soon. I really loved The Skin I Live In as well. I'd rank that one pretty high but I think if fell flat for a lot of people. I don't get it because it's gorgeous and haunting and strange.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is hilarious! It's bold and wacky as shit. It's a fast paced Spanish soap opera/farce. Very different from Volver. I'm So Excited! is also a lot of fun, sexual and irreverent. But not my favorite. I'd put it toward the bottom of the list for sure but worth seeing if you've seen his other work and want something totally off the wall and musical.

They won't run Julieta within 300 miles of here, so I'll have to wait to stream that one.
