Well, plot and story are different things. Every great movie is great because of its story. Not every great movie is great because of its plot.
That is absolutely ridiculous. No great movie is great because of its story. Not a single one.
Untrue.

I dont think anyone is saying the story is the only aspect. Of course it depends o the delivery, but having a great story is super fucking important. A major piece

Like Shawshenk. LIke all great movies, actually.

Though this is why you called the recent adam sandler movie the best movie of all time.

Plot is an important part of story telling. Especially suspense or action adventure or fantasy storytelling. And you've got all three of those sub-genres here.

The trick is to understand, as you do, that there are other elements to great storytelling. And if you can emphasize those elements, especially in a situation like this where the plot MIGHT be largely known already, then you can create a memorable, suspenseful, and gripping story/experience.

It's not a deal breaker, obviously. And maybe the writing can incorporate what we already know in a satisfying way.
I hate plot with a passion, as I'm sure everyone knows. It might be an important part of storytelling. But I don't think storytelling is a particularly important part of cinema.

This idea that people knowing the story's outcome might hurt their enthusiasm is just so bizarre to me. Last time I checked, Titanic was one of the most successful movies of all time. It's not important. How the movie gets there is.
I agree. And I'm going to trust that the film makers know what their doing and this is a nonissue. I have no problem going into something and knowing the outcome. But it can hurt a film if the other elements are lacking as well.

Of course. But I can't think of a movie, a truly great movie that doesn't have a great story. That doesn't mean there aren't some terrible movies with good stories, too.

But joey, the great movies that have great stories aren't great just because of the story. There are other factors such as actors and direction. That is what he is saying.

I can't remember DcT's original message, but basically:

"Name one great movie that is great only because of its [insert any of the myriad things that go into making a great film here]"

is silly.

I'll use the Hunger Games as an example (lol):

Those books were good. It was a good story. But, the movies sucked. So, it had a good story but was a bad movie.

If they had better actors and direction, the movie would have been good. Why? Because the factor of the good actors and direction took the great story and made a great movie.

The Color of Pomegranates is one of the greatest movies ever made, and it doesn't really even have a story.
