This one is great

With Rogue One, we’re able to return to the era of the original trilogy without pandering. It’s a story-first approach to franchise building that allows fans and creators alike to spend more time in an era they love without harping on cheesy callbacks while paying homage to what came before. Case in point: Though the former “Expanded Universe” slate was wiped clean at the start of the Disney era, Rogue One already features many subtle nods to the original theft of the Death Star plans in the beloved Dark Forces game series. Let us now all praise the daring originality of a movie that manages to seperate itself from pandering OT trilogy nostalgia by bringing back the first Death Star, making Darth Vader your chief villian, including younger versions of secondary characters, recycling a story from a Star Wars video game, and craming frames full of storm troopers, At-Ats, and X-wings, all in the service of a story whose ultimate ending is a foregone conclusion.

There are plenty of a-list actors in the prequels, and Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness were pretty serious deals, weren't they?

Yeah but they were peripheral actors. Obi wan is a plot vehicle and not a huge one and Tarkin is almost throwaway

rumours abound that there were actually three different Death Stars under construction at once, all at different stages of completion and one blows up at the weapons test stage and this might be a feature of the story and also explain how the empire had another so quickly by Jedi

I'll be honest, now that I've watched it a few times I like it, but I'm not in love with it. And everything I care about that I'm really excited for is the shit that is already familiar to me. I don't think this was a great trailer in terms of really making me care about the story or getting me intrigued by new characters. I'm sure the girl will be fine but given the recent spate of tween lit movie adaptations she feels familiar. Not sold on Whittiker as the wise veteran. The Asian martial arts guy feels out of place. But I'm usually happy to see shit happen in the star wars universe. More X-wings, Walkers, Star Destroyers, people going into battle--this stuff will always get me excited.

I still like the idea of the story, and I'm sure it'll be good. But I think if we're honest this trailer is just as heavily dependent on the nostalgia beats as Force Awakens. I'm not excited for any of the new things I saw.
