Most of critical think pieces I've read that are critical of the film argue that the film runs into trouble in practice because the superman that appears on screen doesn't actually embody any of the qualities that you describe in your review.

I'll certainly be watching for that when I see it. Nicely written :)

I'm now convinced LV and I are actually watching different movies all the time.

The OTT messianic imagery foisted on us via Superman in this was nauseating and over the top.
Ham fisted in seperating him from the rest of us. We get it. He's our saviour if we let him be but as a society we always kill our idol, saviour or no. So superman shuts up and plays the role of sacrificial lamb.
I really felt Snyder underestimated the intelligence of the audience using that imagery. And in such a laboured way.

Wish he'd spent more time on giving Superman some worthy dialogue in place of him just being this Legolas/talking furniture piece of the story.

You're right, though. Baroque imagery is not a very effective way to explore man vs. god themes. Superman should have just talked more.

It wasn't baroque it was just boring and a lazy use of the character. Who by the way is rendered impotent at several points during the film which neutered any power he's meant to have really.

what is a similar but inferior movie that got rave reviews, Bada?

I don't know that these were pre-written (again, I haven't seen the film), but there may have been baggage the viewers brought with them. There is the superhero fatigue that people either feel or imagine they are feeling, but Snyder also has pretty radically reinterpreted an iconic character, and if you don't like that interpretation much of the rest of the film will suffer (though common complaints about the editing and story telling have been pretty consistent)

Snyder seems to have always been a polarizing director. Even his highest rated movies (except for Dawn of the dead) are barely north of 60%. He has a very distinct visual style that I'm sure many people find over the top, and there is a pervasively bleak tone to his films (even if part of the message is about overcoming it) which can make them exhausting.

I've only seen 3 snyder films. I like watchmen quite a bit (more than the comic, actually). 300 was fine. Man of Steel had an interesting first half, despite some of the pa kent nonsense, but once superman became superman he didn't really seem to have a compelling handle on the character. I haven't seen the other movies of his that have really been divisive. I love Batman, and I love world building, and I'm usually fine with overly complicated plots. So I still have hope that I'll like this. But Devin Faraci hates this, and I tend to be pretty on board with where he lands on a film--even the movies I like more than he does I tend to agree with his critiques. I'm just not as bothered by them

I was thinking of Ant Man, Avenger 2, Skyfall, Jurassic World. Looks like the most recent Hunger Games is a triumph. Some of those I enjoyed but are they really leaps and bounds better than BvS?

The critics appear to disagree.

Yeah I am amazed at that. Maybe they were just so happy it was all over that they wrote positive about it.

I forgot the last few X-Men movies. They loved those. Dozens of characters running around for no real reason beside fan service and to set up future movies. Oh and time travel. 91% fresh.

The Force Awakens

Is an immeasurably better film than batman v superman on every level.

WB has also spent years marketing BvS as an epically important film, which raises expectations, and if youre going to try and say big and important things it also raises the bar you need to clear

I'm not interested in arguing that someone should like this movie more than say Ant-Man only that the idea that BvS is in order of magnitudes way way worse feels like a pile on based on a number of factors having little to do with the movie itself.

I would. It is approximately a million times better than Ant-Man on a number of different levels.
