2-94: Superman vs. Everybody Hurts

This is closer than I would have thought. Everybody Hurts is gonna get my vote but superman is just so fun.

Unpopular as it may be to say, Everybody Hurts has always bugged me a little bit. It's not this haunting, heartbreaking, beautiful piece of pop music to my ears. It's strident and a little whiny and I kind of have to be in just the right head space to enjoy it. It's certainly not a terrible or even a bad song, but it isn't an always song for me either.

Superman isn't great either but it's a lot more fun to listen to and I get more out of it more often. I fully expect EH to win and I get it. But I'm voting for Superman.

Everybody Hurts is a song that I never consider a personal favorite until I'm listening to it, but that's exactly what it is. It's a carefully arranged, beautiful and emotive performance. I don't find it haunting or heartbreaking either. Rather, the sentiment of the lyrics coupled with the ebb and flow of the melody and Stipe's (maybe his best?) vocals creates this airy, yet deeply inclusive feeling. I don't care much for Superman.

I think Stipe's vocals on EH are one of the biggest strikes against it.

Everybody Hurts is not amongst my favotites, it's certainly not as good as the first 3 Automatic tracks, which are all wonderful. But it's still a pretty great track and definetely my vote here.
