JJ Abrams did a wonderful job shooting the lightsabers (the way they're lit, the sound, making it seem special each time they turn on)
My two favorite scene in TFA are when she snatches the lightsaber and a little while later when she drives Ren's red saber into the ground and the music kicks in....

My fav Star Wars moments are as follows:

1. I am your father (what!?!?)

2. Luke taking off Vader's mask

3. Vader appearing out from the smoke on the rebel ship at the beginning of A New Hope
That's a solid top three.
Thank you!

I've only seen people joke that there will never be another male main protagonist and get a lot of shit for it

Well, right, but that's all it ever is, isn't it? It's not like the New York Times is writing an article about how terrible it is to have female leads in Star Wars. Any time there's this kind of "backlash" or discussion we're talking about comments sections, and message boards and the like. The sentiment is out there and it's prevalent. It's ridiculous and offense but it's out there. My hope is that we all can just ignore it and the trolls will go away.

I read this report (which claims to be the largest analysis of film dialogue by gender, ever) yesterday:

http://polygraph.cool/films/

It's an interesting read. And it's telling that even a movie like TFA, with strong female leads, still gives the majority of its dialogue to male characters.

Also, coupling this will so many other comments I've seen about how disappointing it is that, though we are seeing more female leads, they're all white women. Even in the R1 trailer, we see... what two female characters? Both white. Sometimes it feels like the illusion of progress.

There are a lot of different conversations around all of this, I just though it was interesting and relevant to some of the things we were talking about yesterday.

For the record, the trailer passed the Bechdel-Wallace test.

1) The movie has to have at least two women in it,
2) who talk to each other,
3) about something besides a man.

What about the nazi symbolism and the female lead role tokenism?
