I mean, really? You don't think they're worth discussing because they don't directly affect you as a cis, straight, white male? Come on. There are other people besides you. A woman's right to safe, affordable, accessible healthcare seems like something that needs to be discussed. A transgender or gay person's right to dignity and safety seems like something that needs to be discussed. As a society, our governmental needs and issues extend far, far beyond simply how much we pay in taxes and how "secure" we are as a nation. I understand voting for your own interests. But I would hope that the well-being of your fellow citizens would one of your interests. Society can't function without empathy.Bammer wrote:Those issues fall so far below taxes and national security (in my opinion) they're not even worth presidential candidates discussing during election campaigns. Aren't these issues handled at the state level anyway? Look at this new law in NC right now. You think Obama supports it?cutuphalfdead wrote:This is pretty selfish.Bammer wrote:I could give a shit what any given candidate thinks about abortion, transgender bathrooms, or their recollection of Nancy Regan's stance on AIDS research...none of that impacts me.

I was being facetious, of course. But comments like this really do seem awful to me:

If I agreed with a particular candidate's platform on taxes, security, education, health care, and energy...I would vote for them and I would not consider their stance on a social issue that doesn't affect me, even if I disagreed with them on it 100%.
You're telling me you would hinge your vote in the situation described above on the social issue?
Back to my original story, my neighbor was starting to talk about chromosomes and all this...I was just like bro I don't care. If Bruce Jenner wants to chop his dick off, fine. Have at it.

I was also referencing Hillary Clinton getting lambasted for misinterpreting Nancy Regan's stance on AIDS. In the grand scheme does that really matter?

Yes, absolutely. Certain social issues are pass/fail for me. If you're anti-abortion, I don't give a shit what your economic policies are. The thought of women's rights being stripped away scares me a hell of a lot more than paying higher taxes.Bammer wrote:If I agreed with a particular candidate's platform on taxes, security, education, health care, and energy...I would vote for them and I would not consider their stance on a social issue that doesn't affect me, even if I disagreed with them on it 100%.

Please post a list of the things which would be good for the country that no members of said country would disagree with. I'll vote for the good of the country accordingly.

I've tried to make this exact argument here before, bammer.
