I read "A Hologram for the King" last fall because the cover looked intriguing. The book was ok but it kind of began and ended. It was kind of like a play in that there aren't really introductions to any of the characters, they just exist fully-formed to themselves if not to you the reader. So imagine my surprise when I saw it's going to be a movie.



Tom Hanks isn't what I had in mind when I read the book, someone more like Alfred Molina I guess.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Finished The Time Machine this morning, it's a really well-written book - loved the way the whole story was executed. At one point I was wondering whether these particular evolutions were specific to Britain or if it was the same the world over. I would imagine that it would be "pocketed" given how limited travel seemed to have become, and with Britain being an island even more so. An interesting thought exercise since it seems to have been written about particularly British casts of life; I wonder what the Indian or Chinese or even Russian descendents would be like? Especially given how large and varied those land masses are.

Windup Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami

I've never read anything by him, and someone told me this was a good place to start. I like it so far for its style, and I'm expecting it to get really weird any chapter now.

First time? It's awesome, minus King's typical dialogue style.

Yes first time. I'm nearly finished. I can never really think of a good way to explain those King writing ticks that annoy me...those sort of strange cascades of internal monologue/self referential humor King leans on in every novel. Many of his character end up all thinking in the same way. I think that might be what you might mean by dialogue style. It gets a bit much but its par for the course with him. I really like his stuff but I have to take long breaks between books because of that quirk.
