Well, we'll just have to wait and see. Edwards has set himself apart for me in his earlier work, and everything he's said about this leads me to believe it's going to be a different beast. I'm excited for it to be a bit more brutal, though i dont think disney can take it as far as i'd like. Im also hoping Rian isn't blowing smoke up our asses about Episode 8 being darker and stranger than anything we've seen in star warsLoathedVermin72 wrote:Well, we'll just have to wait and see. Re: Star Wars: Rogue One
Yes and no. There should be a continuity to the stories, yes. They all take place in the same universe and shouldn't shy away from that reality. But you don't have to make arbitrary references or callbacks. And, as much as I love TFA, it does a lot of that. Maybe too much of it depending how forgiving and/or nostalgic and/or whimsical you want to be about the whole thing.stip wrote:but those references are also what makes it star wars. They need to be there to a point to ensure everything is part of the same larger universe. It's a big galaxy. If the Narnia movies took place in the star wars universe I don't think we'd be thrilled about calling it star wars
References don't make any of these movies Star Wars movies. Adherence to an agreed upon history and a reliance on setting the story in that shared galaxy is all that makes it Star Wars. You could very much have a Star Wars movie that doesn't have any light sabers in it, for example, and it would still be Star Wars.
The extreme of what you're saying is that A New Hope can't be a Star Wars movie because it doesn't reference other Star Wars movies.

I won't be surprised if something like that happens, actually.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I mean, yeah, it obviously contains familiar iconography and references. Everyone keeps saying they expect this to be darker and/or grittier. I haven't seen enough evidence of that to feel sold on the idea. The trailer really isn't any grittier. The production stills I've seen don't like especially darker or grittier, either. Maybe because of Gareth's past films people are expecting it, and I'm not saying it won't be, just I don't have reason to think so based on what we've seen from the actual film, yet.
It's a "war" movie, focusing more the "civilians" than the heroes and wizards and all that. But that doesn't automatically equal gritty in my eyes. I expect it to have a different feel/tone but I'm not sold on "grim" yet.

Of course references aren't wha tmake it star wars but some major themes, i feel, should always be present or looming over the story. Re: Star Wars: Rogue One
I think one could make a damn great Star Wars movie without direct mention of the Force, and without the Empire at all. The good v evil thing, perhaps, but even that can be bent and stretched. It just needs to adhere to the shared universe. But that universe is more than good v evil, the Force and The Empire.Strat wrote:Of course references aren't wha tmake it star wars but some major themes, i feel, should always be present or looming over the story. This all started because of the "girl has daddy issues" sort of family saga aspect that this movie may or may not have. I just don't think it needs to be that kind of thing to be a good movie or even a Star Wars movie. That's all.

Yeah I can't stand that guy in fantasy or scifi. He's great in a dramatic role, but appears to think that the only acting required by fantastical stories is a BIG BIG BIG delivery.BurtReynolds wrote:I got some bad Battlefield Earth flashbacks seeing Forest Whitaker in this.

Certainly. Though, and ill admit, that is what I want to see in a star wars movie. Re: Star Wars: Rogue One
It's a balancing act that the last movie was too far out on one side of. They should take care.
"Needing" to adhere to, tie-in to, or rehash the past is exactly the conservatism that turned Star Trek into dull trash that needed a reboot. When Ron Moore pitched his idea for a new series, he was told "no way, it needs to look, behave, and feel more like Star Trek." So he turned his idea into Battlestar Galactica and they made nothing that anybody will ever love.

Re: Star Wars: Rogue One
The family struggle/sage element isn't important to me. But I do like seeing the familiar ships and uniforms of the time the stories are set in. And of course having things like light sabers and The Force are important to help bridge time frames and bridge gaps. So I like that stuff too. The good v evil thing is also fairly important though I could see it being less black and white in future installments.Strat wrote:Certainly.
