Which PJ song is currently tickling your fancy?
I sometimes forget how great this band was and is - and sometimes a song you have heard a million times decides to show its beautiful face again and remind you of the times spent with the music.
Right now for Strat it is Nothingman.
I am listening to every live version I have and I cannot seem to get enough of it. Its always been a great song. I am very happy it has become a fairly regularly played tune over the past decade or so. I especially love listening to it whilst laying in bed with headphones. Get lost in that space. It also has a tasty vibe whilst driving 65 MPH through the mountains on a clear dark night and windows rolled down.
Thats good stuff.

I listened to "Strangest Tribe" a bunch of times last night. Great song.

Probably World Wide Suicide, although I've listened to a lot of No Code recently.

Re: Which PJ song is currently tickling your fancy?
dissident. it's my favorite song on vs. yes, i know indifference and rearviewmirror are on that record too, and they were both my favorite at one point, but i haven't been angry or self-loathing in a long time. it's been dissident for probably a decade now.
i know eddie said it's about a woman taking in a political fugitive, but i don't give a shit what he says. i don't think about oedipus every time i listen to alive either. for me, since listen #1, dissident has been about a new mother who tried (nursed him there over a night) but ultimately couldn't handle the responsibility, so she folded and gave the baby up for adoption. since then, she's glided on, but it's haunted her, as she's discovered that escaping adversity is never the safest path.
yeah, it's just a beautiful song. and the guitar. it's almost like an eddie and mike duet. i remember that self-righteous five horizons chick bagging on this song all the time, and i think she influenced a lot of people to agree with her. it's also stuck between the two oddest tracks (like em both, though) on vs. it's a shame. i think this is the most under-appreciated song in the catalog.

just cuz you don't, or is there something specific? it's in a small group of songs that get very little love and i can't understand why. i'd put mfc and force of nature in that group.cutuphalfdead wrote:not a big dissident fan

MFC is great. Dissident just sounds very bland and dated to me.daft twat wrote:just cuz you don't, or is there something specific? it's in a small group of songs that get very little love and i can't understand why. i'd put mfc and force of nature in that group.cutuphalfdead wrote:not a big dissident fan

I actually like the music, especially the bridge, but I'm usually turned off by songs with a detailed narrative and this is no exception.cutuphalfdead wrote:MFC is great. I think Dissident might be the song with the greatest difference between how die-hard fans view it versus how casual fans view it. You almost never hear people who are emotionally invested in the band mention it, but a shocking amount of very casual fans seem to hold it in very high regard.

The batshit insane couple who were next to me at the second Adelaide show in 2006 were really excited to hear Dissident.
The band didn't play it, though I doubt my seat neighbours would have noticed as they were manic and sweaty up until the band hit the stage, started furiously making out once they began playing and then disappeared after the first few songs never to return.

Re: Which PJ song is currently tickling your fancy?
I used to love Dissident, and still understand why I did, but I think of all pearl jam songs it is the one that feels the most played out to me after 20 years. I think that is in part because I feel like a number of other songs touched on similar ideas, in ways that were either more recent or potentially more interesting. Dissident lost a bit of its identity.

I too used to love Dissident but now it drags. Seems too pearl-jam-by-numbers, like a STP track.
Some random tracks popped up this morning. Alive from Vault 1 was great and Even Flow from Boston 94. Man, Dave drummed/grooved the fuck outta that beast.

I like "Dissident". It's a very nice song. It's always fun to hear how Mikey resolves at the end. He'll play a nice little lick right as the song crawls to a stop and it's different every time.
