you could get multiple movies out of bounty hunters or smugglers or other things without ever mentioning jedi or lightsabers and it would be great. Star Wars is a big world. It never occurred to me that people think Star Wars meant Jedi/lightsabers/Skywalkers until recently, which is crazy to me.

It doesnt make star wars, im just saying that is the aspect of star wars i love most.

Thats probably my least favorite aspect of Star Wars, especially now that you can't take a piss without stumbling into a Skywalker.

I actually am a huge fan of the way disney is handling this. They have their main trilogy and then using the anthology films to explore this other side of Star Wars. Im super excited about Rogue One and less excited about Han, but i think there is a lot of potential for exploring this larger universe.

And then ill get my sky walker force jedi mumbo jumbo in the main trilogies

I agree. You don't need all these things, but you do need touchstones relevant to the story you're telling

but those references are also what makes it star wars. They need to be there to a point to ensure everything is part of the same larger universe. It's a big galaxy. If the Narnia movies took place in the star wars universe I don't think we'd be thrilled about calling it star wars

Yes and no. There should be a continuity to the stories, yes. They all take place in the same universe and shouldn't shy away from that reality. But you don't have to make arbitrary references or callbacks. And, as much as I love TFA, it does a lot of that. Maybe too much of it depending how forgiving and/or nostalgic and/or whimsical you want to be about the whole thing.

References don't make any of these movies Star Wars movies. Adherence to an agreed upon history and a reliance on setting the story in that shared galaxy is all that makes it Star Wars. You could very much have a Star Wars movie that doesn't have any light sabers in it, for example, and it would still be Star Wars.

The extreme of what you're saying is that A New Hope can't be a Star Wars movie because it doesn't reference other Star Wars movies.

Well it sets the standard. I don't necessarily mean direct references and explicit callbacks. But references to the force, Jedi, bounty hunters, certain types of vehicles, storm troopers. That needs to be there, i think

Again, I agree and I don't. It has to feel like it's taking place in the same time if it is, in fact, taking place in the same time. They could do an Old Republic movie that takes place thousands of years before the Empire and the rebellion and I wouldn't expect any of the same types of vehicles, storm troopers, bounty hunters, etc. In that movie, though there probably is the Force and light sabers. So, yeah, there should be some kind of common language and connective tissue. But I could come up with any number of great ideas for Star Wars movies that don't contain any of the things you listed above but could still feel like they are a part of that common language/shared universe.

So, yeah, small references can help for sure, but I don't think it needs a light saber to be a Star Wars movie. I mean, is Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back a Star Wars movie?

I think the character stories could be good, with the right characters chosen. I think an Obi-wan, with McGregor, could be great. But Han and Boba Fett I don't think will be interesting. I'm a Boba Fett fan, but come on, he doesn't even talk. And Han is good as "that funny guy" lead who is always getting into a pickle, but I don't think there is enough substance in the Han Solo character to get a good movie out of it.

Yeah, this is basically where I'm at. I just want them to get these easy, obvious spinoffs out of the way so we can get to something really great that takes place outside of the known cinematic history.

Stip's idea, as I recall, was a TV show that's largely set and based out of Jabba's Palace. It would be similar (in my mind) to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and focus on all the characters, the dancers, the staff, the slaves, the smugglers, the bounty hunters, all of it.

Sounds like Ruddo is jamming the same thing just as a movie instead of a show. The potential for a show is tremendous, though, I think. Jabba would be in it but it wouldn't necessarily be about him.

Just watched the trailer again in hd and on a big screen.

Why use Lukes theme on the piano solo? Especially if you're trying to establish it as a standalone?

The admiral in the white looks like Ian McKellan in one of them Shakespeare films he's done.

The ambiguity fog being fluffed out is a little too obvious about Jyn

The samurai character is pointless.

The action sequence looks like that video game battlefront.


Even I want the action figure of Jyn in the TIE pilot outfit.


The Death Stars weapons array was already in place at the end of ROTS so could be the first did actually explode upon test firing and this is the second one.

Don't know what to make of the scene of the hooded figure kneeling and the imperial guards. But, Looks like one of those medical cocoons we see Luke inside of in ESB.

Tie that to the scene of the samurai. Has the emperor been attacked? We see an imperial guard injured in the background of that scene.


I'm more excited than I was but this better be all fleshed out a it more next trailer. Or I'm going home.
