Anybody love Pearl Jam's mellow soft songs?

Post by mikejasond »

(I know Im making a lot of topics right now, deal with it  )

I made a playlist of Pearl Jam's soft songs....most are mellow though some are just light/lofty.

Just listening to Dead Man, and I LOVE this song. Eddie sounds so good, his voice is really haunting when sung softly. Of course I love their loud songs, but these are really awesome. I love Dead Man, I love Thumbing My Way, I love All Or None....these are honestly the strongest songs in their later years I feel like. Even Riot Act which I dont like much had All Or None and TMW. They really stand out. I love Sleeping By Myself too...Fatal is great...

I wish their later albums would go more in this direction, I think Eddie now sounds better doing this stuff. His ukulele album was boring to me but the PJ version of Sleeping by Myself was great....should do a PJ album with more of these types of songs.

Any playlist advice?

It currently includes

Thumbing My way
Dead Man
Strangest Tribe
Parachutes
Soon Forget
Sleeping By Myself
Future Days
Man Of the Hour
The End
Hard To Imagine
Fatal
Wasted Reprise
Low Light
All Or None
Around The Bend
Wishlist
Parting Ways
Speed Of Sound
The Long Road
Indifference
Sometimes
Off He Goes

I really don't like Long Road but its pretty slow so its on here...am I missing any good ones?

Oh Low Light is amazing too.

I dunno I don't really get it...it just kinda...drones. It doesnt go anywhere...you hear every part of the song in the first few seconds. Its kind of slow and plodding and nothing happens, and it's not particularly beautiful or anything. Its just sort of...slow. We all walk the long road cannot stay we all walk the long road we all walk the long road....Its like 20% of a song <_<

I would agree Long Road isn't really a good listen all by itself. It is pleasing to hear after I Got ID on the single. Can't remember the last time I listened to it.

Off He Goes is a career highlight IMO while Thumbing My Way mostly blows.

Don't know if you consider it a slow jam, but my fav PJ song of all time is All Those Yesterdays, followed real close by Immortality. Didn't see either of those on your list, but maybe bc you do not share the same opinion as me. 8-)

Oh I really like both of those I just wouldn't call them mellow and soft. Immortality is pretty loud - in fact that's the one thing I don't like about it, it's a little harsh on the ears with the drums and guitars but I guess that's an intentional effect. It does really work for me in the guitar solos but there are times I think its a bit harsh, but I really like the song.

All those yesterdays is great, was happy to hear it in concert in Brooklyn 2013, though it wasnt as good live.

Nothing Man
Angel
Footsteps
Let me sleep
Of the Girl
Trouble (cover)
Crazy Mary

I'd switch out Speed of Sound with the superior acoustic version.
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

I prefer the "Dead Man Walking: The Score" version on most days.

Thats true actually...lol.

Its not that I dislike it but I dont really get it.

As for Nothing Man, Footsteps, Of The Girl, and Crazy Mary, I like all those songs but don't consider them all that mellow though they are close, they kinda build a bit though.

Maybe it has a good message but I can't understand a word Eddie says on it and the music by itself is not that pleasing, the melody isnt that interesting to me....

Maybe its a song you have to read the lyrics alongside it or something.

It actually took me a lot to really enjoy SoH, but now it's one of my favorites. The music is fantastic and there aren't many things that I love more than how this song explodes in the chorus.

Sleight of Hand was an instant favorite for me. From first listen it's been one of my favorite PJ songs. Just glorious. Ethereal.
