Deep lyric question
So, this may sound a bit naïve, but at the end of the second verse of Deep, when Ed says " and he sinks the burning match deep", what the hell does that mean?
Let me tell you, Homer Simpson is cock of nothing!

Take that misheard lyric to the misheard lyric thread.

Re: Deep lyric question
I am by now pretty foggy on what the original lyrics were and what Ed sings live (so is he) but I'm sure he's sung that line as "burning match" at some point.
Same with RVM's "pissed on my plate" from the other thread - Ed's definitely sung that live even if it's not the original lyric.

Good point. I was actually listening to the 4/3/94 show and he definitely said "match".Birds in Hell wrote:I am by now pretty foggy on what the original lyrics were and what Ed sings live (so is he) but I'm sure he's sung that line as "burning match" at some point.

Does Eddie even know the lyrics?
Nothing makes me more annoyed than the fact he has apparently completely overwritten the first word of Even Flow to be "Kneelin". I know it doesn't matter, but that song is one of their most iconic and the way Eddie's vocals cut in are so memorable....I hate that he has changed that "FREEEEEEziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin"

Does it? How can you rest your head on the ground while you're kneeling? Those are two different stances...
He's a homeless guy right? He's freezing, and he's sleeping on the concrete ground. Two things that show the state of his life very quickly in one sentence. Makes sense to me.

Re: Deep lyric question
Ed hasn't rewritten the words to Even Flow. He has literally forgotten what he's supposed to sing when. He sings 'kneeling' every verse, because he knows the law of averages means it's gonna be right for one of them.

I never understood the chorus to this song: wouldn't not being able to touch the bottom mean that you weren't in deep enough, not in too deep?

I think it's supposed to be like a rock and hard place kind of thing. The idea being he/she is in so, so deep but they still can't touch the bottom. The person is fucked. They're stuck in the middle; too far from the surface and too far from the bottom to touch it and shoot themselves back up tot the top.

Or just like in the deep end of a pool or out in deep water. Not being able to touch the bottom freaks some people out. That's the way I've always heard it.
Again, water, surf, swimming.

Re: Deep lyric question
Ive noticed watching live versions that this started way back in 1992....has nobody ever let him know? I mean I dunno...missing the first word of your song when the vocals cuts in as aggressively as they do is a real letdown....That first word is a big moment of the song.durdencommatyler wrote:Ed hasn't rewritten the words to Even Flow.
