Well when those in power do everything they can to make voting as hard as possible, because they know lower turnouts favor them, it casts a shadow on the results. People waited in line for upwards of 5 hours to vote in the Arizona primary. The Voting Rights Act was recently overturned. Voter ID laws that disproportionately affect poor and minority people are all the rage now.Birds in Hell wrote:I'll admit the idea of non-compulsory voting is somewhat alien to me as an Australian but, given that's how your system works, I don't see how that makes the result any less legitimate.stip wrote:it's not a majority. It's a well organized minority that bothers to show up to vote.

Remember, Pete, only certain portions of the VRA were overturned: the parts that prevented states with a history of discrimination from easily changing their voting laws. What could possibly go wrong?cutuphalfdead wrote:Well when those in power do everything they can to make voting as hard as possible, because they know lower turnouts favor them, it casts a shadow on the results. it doesn't. I was just disputing the majority claim.Birds in Hell wrote:I'll admit the idea of non-compulsory voting is somewhat alien to me as an Australian but, given that's how your system works, I don't see how that makes the result any less legitimate.stip wrote:it's not a majority. I was talking about people in the government and the obscenely wealthy, not the US population as a whole - which is mostly Christian (radical or not) anyway. I think the fact that they are doing everything that they can to prevent minorities from voting at all is pretty scandalous in and of itself, and tends to make the "people voted for us so it's the people's will" excuse seem pathetically self-serving in hindsight.stip wrote:it's not a majority. Re: Pearl Jam Cancels Their NC Show?
That's a very fair criticism, I definitely wasn't considering any difficulties in being able to actually cast a vote.cutuphalfdead wrote:Well when those in power do everything they can to make voting as hard as possible, because they know lower turnouts favor them, it casts a shadow on the results.
