A huge amount of people-- the "general audience"-- barely even think of him as an instrumentalist, just as a pop singer. I know I did for the longest time, and was blown away when I first saw him getting these sounds out of a guitar.

In general I find the whole public grieving and excessive eulogising that comes with the death of a prominent musician slightly bizarre.
