I have to think he'd get more for charging less, but in the end, it's worth what he can charge for.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

There are so many problems with everything you're saying, trag. The number one issue is the implication that it would somehow be better if he had spent more money on it. This thing has the perfect aesthetic for what it is. It is a fully realized piece of art, not some half-assed project he threw together to make a buck. You have written several long, critical posts about a series you have never seen or even listened to Louis talk about.
What it comes down to is: If it's not worth $31 for you to see Louis' newest project, even if it comes recommended, don't buy it.

That makes sense. Since I love both equally.

preach
You, know, I’m so glad I didn’t get cast on S.N.L. I'm way better off because I host it now. That’s a million times cooler and more fun because to be a castmember there or a featured player or writer is a perilous, difficult, grueling office job — like the worst kind of office job, a 12-hour-a-day job with no end in sight. As a host, you have dinner with the cast and you hang out with Lorne. You get the best of that guy, and he’s a great New York institution. As a host, you get to just sit next to him and watch him do a thing that very few people do anymore. Spending a week there is one of my favorite things I get to do.

Still, in any case, $31 for a digital series is likely more than I'm willing to pay. I still have trouble with the concept of paying to "own" something with no physical copy. It's a weird psychological block.
Right there with you. I'd love to pay $.99 for the ability to watch an episode of...whatever...Archer (for the sake of argument) rather than pay $1.99 to own it. I don't want to own it, I just want to watch it once. But now that I own it I don't want to delete it so it takes up space. Ugh.

Don't judge me, I can't explain the rationale at all. Digital hording, maybe?

I do wish there was a "rent" as well as a buy option for more digital content. H&P is maybe an example of that. Would I pay $10 to watch it once? Maybe I would.

I mean, I'm an idiot when it comes to digital media, though. So maybe they don't do that because it's so easy to rip that content? Maybe people would "rent" it and then just keep and/or distribute it. Maybe that's why.

In the past, Louis has let you purchase a standup set from his site, and it comes with several codes, I think 2 for downloading the thing, and 3 for streaming. And he encourages you to share with your friend. My buddy and I have purchased and swapped everything else he's posted on his site before, excluding stuff wasn't already available on Netflix.
I'm not sure but I think that's because, again, that stuff was produced in conjunction with other institutions/backers/producers/HBO/etc... and H&P is entirely Louis CK. I mean maybe there are other producers involved or backers but isn't the whole thing his production company and no one else? Maybe that's why. He invested a shit ton into this project from what I understand. But who knows. Maybe he's just trying this out and figuring out what's best moving forward.

Also, those other projects have all been stand-up concerts, and he already makes a hefty income on the ticket sales; adding a couple of cameras and editing it into a film is just easy money after the fact.
Good call.
