No. I don't believe this.
It's stupid but I think it was confirmed by Ed's handwritten lyrics

I'm almost certain Jorge is making that up but there's no doubt it's "chains".

It's in his handwritten notes in the Vitalogy "album book" liner notes right?

It's a song that took me a while to grasp because it is very very different.

For all that people say "Binaural/Riot Act are so UNIQUE. In My tree is so UNIQUE" I don't think it matters if something is unique just for the sake of being unique. That isn't a praise in itself. but Corduroy is VERY unique, I don't really know another song by anybody that is like it, but to me this one just WORKS.

The message of the song is something that you can feel through Eddie's delivery even when some individual lines might not make sense because he has this passion in his voice, and the music....man...when that middle section comes in, and those chords are just going, and the drums are booming, it is one of the most transcendent moments in their catalog it is SOARING.

And honestly this song is MADE by the drums, this song is held together and brought to new heights thanks to Dave A, this may be one of the most important drum songs in the catalog, the way the drums drive everything forward, meshes with the guitars and holds everything together...the guitar parts are strange in the verses, as I said, I dont know a song that has verses with instrumentation like this one, but the drums center it and make it work.

The banging drums on that middle bridge and the rolls....man....it is so powerful.

Its weird because it has qualities of some later PJ songs that I do not like but for whatever reason I do love this one.

Also some amazing lines in here..."everything has chains, absolutely nothing's changed, take my hand, not my picture" "Ill end up alone like I began" "can't buy what I want because its free".

This song is a monster and definitely the best song on Vitalogy...that whole album had a unique sound that comes through in Immortality, Last Exit, Not for You, and this one - and in this one it is perfected.
What. I've always heard that line as "Everything has changed; absolutely nothing's changed"

Huh. I think I like mine better.
Yours is definitely correct
I also like your line better but that's not what it is

Yup. I was *counts on fingers* 17 when that song came out and that line was awesome. It's been awesome for 22 years, now it's not.

I mean I get the lyric as it's written but it's not great.

side note: that was my first pearl jam album. My mom came home one day with two tapes, asking me if I liked Meat balls and Toe Jam. Moms, amirite?

Ed's handwritten lyrics also read "get out of my lucky face." Not to be trusted.

I don't think it matters at all to my enjoyment of the song whether it is "chains" or "changed".

I've always thought it was "changed", but a quick search of all the main lyrics sites on the interwebz all say "chains".

My whole life is a lie.
