I started training hard and hurt myself almost immediately (shin splints that made walking painful). I dialed it back and hoped with the coming of spring, I'd be running outside. spring never really came, and I got outside quite late. 7 or 8 weeks ago, I ran outside for 23 miles. unfortunately, I hurt my right knee and continued to run on it. I then took 3 weeks off. then I ran 14 and my knee hurt badly again. I took another 3 off. this time the pain returned after only 5 miles. for the past two weeks, I started stretching and running in a knee brace. last sunday I ran 7 miles relatively pain free.
the confession: I never properly dieted like I said I would. I started at 172 pounds in February and that's exactly what I weighed last night (i'm 5'9"). last night I ate taco pizza, had a beer, a whiskey 7, and half a bag of reeses minis.
today was race day. conditions were ideal. just over 50 degrees. I took a big runny dump 10 minutes before the race, and I put myself in the group trying to finish in 4 hours. I actually should have started farther up, as my start was hindered badly and the first mile took me almost 9 minutes.
long story short, through 23 miles I averaged 8:03. then the knee pain started. then at 24.5, my iphone (music) died because I left my run tracker's screen lit and didn't realize it. hardly anyone passed me for 24 miles. for the last two at least 150 people passed me. I wound up averaging 8:18. I finished in 3:37:03. had I done everything I said I was going to do - ate better, trained smarter -I probably could have done better. but I obviously couldn't do those things. still, i'm really happy. I've never accomplished anything remotely athletic in my life. until today. the coolest thing - my old man handed me a Gatorade at mile 22, and my mom said he teared up. I've only ever seen that once in his life, and that was when his mom died. I have to go down stairs sideways right now, but it was a good day.
3:37 is a hell of a first marathon. I told you that you're a natural. I smell a BQ in your future.
Nice fucking work!

coming from the mr. miyagi of this thread, that means a lot. thanks. bq? that's crazy talk. right now i have to slide down the stairs i'm in so much pain. still smiling though.
Got up at 6 and hit the canals. It was cool (about 80) and I felt great. Kinda took it easy and was a bit surprise to be running 7:30s with such an easy effort. Out in 38. Back in 37. A nice way to start a Sunday. Still about 7 lbs. lighter (163) than before the Canyon run, so I guess that explains the easy effort 7:30s.

Mr. Miyagi? That just means I'm old, right?
I don't know, man. Bettering your first marathon by 15 to 30 minutes on your second marathon is a fairly common occurrence. That'll put you sub 3:15. Your BQ is 3:10. I don't think that's a ridiculous goal for you.
Not to put any pressure on you, but I look forward to seeing what you do next.
Ran twice yesterday. 3.2 mi in 26 min in the morning. then 3.9 in 35 min in the evening. i had the energy and thought i might as well since kids were in bed early, and i am not goign to be able to run today or tomorrow.
Speed work on the treadmill. Felt pretty solid, but stopped after 5 because they paged me to change my daughter's poopy diaper at the gym child care center. Instead of going back for one more mile, I just left for home. More speed work tomorrow.

So - she's a party pooper then?

Got in an okay workout last night followed by a shortened treadmill run. I want to knock up the intensity though the rest of the week; I know next week is going be slack from a workout view point with the 4th but I'm also running participating in a 10k so I'm going to baby my legs somewhat right before and a few days after.
More speed work on the treadmill. Didn't feel great, but gutted it out. My next goal is a PR on the 7+ mile trail that runs along Lake Michigan near my sister's cottage in Door County, Wis. It'll take a superhuman effort for me to do it. I set my PR several years ago while racing with a college cross-country team that was staying at a lodge nearby.
Felt awesome today. Fell into a great rhythm and cruised. After I finished, I regretted not pushing for a sub-65. Speed work is paying off. I'll be killing some PRs in Door County this year.
after 3 days off due to travel, clocked in 5 mi last night. even at 8pm it was still very humid and thick. decent run, but did not feel satisfied afterward.
Had planned on going to the gym last night but successfully talked myelf out of it. But my legs & back were still a little sore from Wednesday so I was able to rationalize it a bit. May go in after work tonight but most likely will just wait until the morning. Update I got in a good one Saturday morning. Going to double up and go back tomorrow. I want to get another good one in since between a 10k and the 4th it's going to be broken up workout week.
Western States is today. It's considered the "Super Bowl" of American ultrarunning (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc is this for Europe). I have qualified for it several times, but never toed the line. Current ultra stud Kilian Jornet is not running it this year, which leaves defending champion Timothy Olson as the clear favorite. I'll be pulling for Meghan Arbogast, who is my favorite ultrarunner. She's a 52-year-old woman who routinely wins (that's overall, not "just" the women's division) races and remains a class act and a great representative of the sport.
Anyone interested should check out "Unbreakable: The Western States 100". It details the now legendary showdown between Anton Krupicka and Geoff Roes and offers some great insight into what it takes to compete in a 100-mile race.
Easy day on the treadmill. Just enjoyed myself and fell into a nice groove. No finishing kick. Planks and push-ups afterward in the sauna.

I usually hit the treadmill for most of June and July, then move to early morning runs later in the summer. Generally, I stay in "maintenance mode" for most of the summer, before picking things up in early September.
Went for a 2-hour bike ride on my fixed-gear road bike yesterday. It was about 120 degrees out and after about 20 minutes, I found myself on a desolate stretch of road. Fell into weird rhythm and kinda zoned out. Before I knew it, it was an hour later. I picked it up on the return because I told my wife I would only be gone for "an hour or so." When I got back I realized I didn't actually attach my under-seat storage bag, which had my cell phone and extra tire. I would have been totally fucked if I had a flat.
Back to back workouts Saturday & Sunday so today is a rest day. I'll go tomorrow but focus mostly on upper body. I have a 10k coming up Thursday and don't want to do anything that would risk tweaking something.
Speaking of which rain is in the forecast Thursday. I start at 9am and while we usually don't get morning rain this time of year I'm definitely going to make sure to see what the forecast/radar looks like that morning. I'm not a serious runner at all and the idea of standing around outside a good hour before starting and then running/walking 6.2 miles in the rain is not my idea of a good time. If it's just light showers that's one thing but the wet stuff looks to be set in or heavier rain is coming I may just skip this one and go back to bed.
