Agreed. Made sense for the character, moved the story forward, and maintained tension/drama. Felt the same way about the Greyjoy encounter on the bridge.

Plus they had to get the dragons into the air somehow. I wonder if they'll work the disease threat into that storyline.

Interesting line of discussion, inspired by the AV Club's expert review today: does Jon's resurrection open the door for Lady Stoneheart? It sure seems like the Kingsmoot was delayed so that the death of Balon lined up with Melisandre's loss of faith--now that all the kings she cursed are dead, it gives some credence to her power. Delaying Lady Stoneheart makes the same sort of sense: bringing her back last season (or even the one before) would have erased the (admittedly muted) tension surrounding whether Jon would rise again or now. Now that that's settled, Cat could certainly make an appearance.

I'm skeptical, as I feel that'd be just another storyline to try and squeeze into the hour they have every week. The Riverlands have been short-shifted for years, and I don't think they'll make a sudden dramatic return like the Iron Islands did last night.

i'm wondering if they'll combine some of the LSH stuff into the jon snow character now instead.

It feels impossible to discuss the books, being so far behind, but if anyone can point me to a good corner of the web where I can follow along with old discussion as I make progress it would be greatly appreciated. This book approach after already watching the series is proving pretty disorienting.

Haha, for sure. Thanks. The most difficult part so far has proven to be keeping track of what I know as canon because of the TV series, the 100 pages and the appendix that I've read so far, and various wiki read-ups or clarifying plot/character points from readers I've gleaned over the years.

Example: In an early Ned chapter in GoT, Ned and Robert discuss the Targaryan/Dothraki wedding. Robert is still pretty miffed at the targ house, but as a reader I'm not sure I'm supposed to know exactly why just yet.

I had seen the first four seasons of the show before getting into the books, so I had a similar experience.

I would come into this very thread and post my thoughts, and ignore all posts that weren't direct replies to mine own.

I think chud and others can speak to this better, but this is--so I've heard, I've never done it--why the books open up and become even more engrossing on re-reads. The first season of the show sticks pretty close to the book, so you'll have lots of these moments, but as you keep going and the two begin to diverge (and as the books take huge deep dives into corners that the show only touched) you'll start to get the feeling that you're reading a new, exciting text instead of simply having deja vu.

Yeah the first book is almost identical to the first season. The major differences aren't really differences, just more explanation. And most of that deeper look has to do with Bran's dreams with the three eyes raven. Books two and three are generally the same but more differences start popping up. By book 4 it's completely different.

And this series is designed for a re read. Reading it already knowing where most things are going, allows you to really pick up on the foreshadowing and all that jazz. My third time through was probably the most rewarding.

I'm rereading the series and I can agree with this statement. I didn't really care for the Jon Snow chapters in book 1-3 so I am getting a lot of them this time.
