I'm not crazy about HTTT either.

For years I had written Radiohead off as a teenage indulgence and only rediscovered their catalogue a few years ago.

I still find their pre-Kid A albums pretty bad and Thief feels like an unwelcome retread of lots of those ideas.

The Gloaming > There, There is actually great shower music. I've always enjoyed HTTT despite its many flaws.

Huh. I always just assumed everyone else loved HTTT too. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Good songs from Thief:

We Suck Young Blood (especially this one)
The Gloaming
A Punch Up at a Wedding
Myxomatosis

Not that it matters, but why no love for There There? or Backdrifts? Just trying to crack open the spenno egg is all.

I think it's fantastic. It's very difficult for me to rank Kid A through Rainbows but HTTT can easily hang with any of them.

I don't hate it. (Did I say I hated it? I honestly don't remember...) Anyway, I don't. I just think there are other albums that accomplish the same emotional soundscape as HTTT more effectively and more efficiently.
Name one.

Hail to the Thief is a wonderful album. I think "Sail to the Moon" is among Thom Yorke's most beautiful songs. I understand the criticism that it's the first album in a while where the band stopped pushing "forward" stylistically, but the songs are solid.

In Rainbows was the album that most felt like a "re-hash" or something that wasn't pushing forward stylistically to me when I first heard it. Moreso than HTTT. It's not, and I know that now. It's deceptively straight forward while revealing more and more after each listen. My gut reaction to "Burn The Witch" is similar. I think this song has more to offer than it lets on.

I'm not convinced those other albums fulfill the same sonic or emotional space. They certainly don't sound like HTTT to me. Kid A has a completely different soundscape (much more ambient, heavier on the electronic side). Amnesiac is jazzier, looser. HTTT sounds singular in their discography to me. Earthy, warm, romantic, dreamy, sinister, mean, cutting, and even aggressively rocking in ways those albums aren't at all. Adding in the more conventional rock instrumentation from The Bends and OK Computer to what they explored in those albums is a huge step forward, even if they take, in a manner of speaking, a step back to do it. It's a vital link that ties their catalog together.
