Just went back and listened. It's okay. I'm not crazy about his piano ballads in general.

I'd been listening to the Archives a lot lately and that in turn has gotten me into songs that I had over-looked previously. For example, my iTunes rankings on some songs were 2 and 3 stars but after the archives I bumped them up to 4 and 5 stars. I honestly found myself wondering what I was thinking when I ranked the songs previously.

The Birds is a good example of that. I mean, it's only on there three times (each Topanga disc) but it's great.

Rust Never Sleeps didn't do all that much for me as a whole, but "Into the Black" is killer. That riff!

Hawks and Doves is an underrated one in my opinion.

Greendale is his "rock opera". Read up on it to see if it interests you. Greendale is more "late" career though.

H&D is 1980 or 81 I think, so that would count as mid-career.

In other news, "On the Beach" (the song) is sheer perfection. Kinda like a laid-back, contemplative version of the dreamy, nighttime mood Dr. John was getting at on Gris-Gris, only with a somber urban road-trip feel in place of sinister voodoo mysticism.

What a staggering use of sound. Oh my god.

It was an outtake from his scrapped Chrome Dreams record. I don't believe he updated it at all, just through it on AS&B because he felt like it. If you haven't figured it out yet, part of what makes his discography so rewarding is that he doesn't give a fuck, so you'll be treated to little gems tucked into albums that are otherwise unremarkable. Just wait until Trans.

It's all the subtle background noises that make it. It sounds like there's just ambient noise of a crackling fire, I think? And some weird, out-of-sync drums and stuff at one point. Man alive.

"Will to Love" had been intended for Young's never released Chrome Dreams album.[2] He recorded the song alone in a single take on a two track cassette tape, sitting in front of a fireplace playing acoustic guitar.[2][3][4][5] He used a fader and applied stereo vibrato to achieve a fish sound.[3][4] He also overdubbed percussion, bass and vibraphone himself.[3][4][5] He claims to have mixed the song the same night he recorded it and it was completed in about 8 hours.[3][4][6]

Yeah, I do think it's one that may open up on repeat listens. I did like elements of a lot of the songs, even if the music didn't always grab me.

You're now the second person to mention Trans is up my alley. I'm excited.
