I'm pretty sure he just dropped off Sansa at Winterfell, told her to be good, and got the fuck out of there. But I forget a lot of the show changes from season 5 so I may be wrong.

That's basically my memory as well. But I couldn't remember if he'd given us a hint about where he was headed or not. Did he imply (or say) that he was going to find Dany?

Slinking out of Winterfell, pretty sure he was on his way to answer a summons from Cersei. I don't remember 100% of what Cersei knows, though--I'm sure she doesn't know about his involvement in Ramsay and Sansa's marriage, she doesn't know about his involvement in Joffrey's death, but she might have known that he's the new protector of the Vale. Maybe.

He left winterfell for kings landing after cersei summoned him. Once there, he told cersei about Sansa's marriage to Ramsey, and she instructed him to take the Knights of the Vale to the north and defeat whomever was left standing between Stannis and the Boltons. She also requested Sansa's head. In return, he would be named the warden of the North. He then met with Lady Olenna on his way out of town, and told her about Cersei's dalliances with Lancel, leading to her imprisonment.

When the show and book split, I do my best to just remember what happened in the books.

I was having a hard time keeping track of the differing storylines, so I rewatched season 5 in the week before the season 6 premiere as a refresher. Otherwise, I likely wouldn't have remembered a lot of that.

I thought about doing that but then remembered season 5 sucked.

Outside of the Hardhome episode it was about as good as the books that inspired it (FoC and ADWD).

ADWD was good, not great. A Feast of Crows was a chore to get through at times.

I felt that way the first time I read them. When I re-read the series, I read the combined version of those two, and it improved them exponentially. That said, the story is almost unfilmable as written, so I understand the need to streamline. I just don't always agree with the execution.

this

The chapters at the end of ADWD, picking up where the two books meet chronologically, are among the best in the series.

The Cersei chapters in AFFC were the ones I enjoyed the least, and having them more spread out among the chapters of both books made them a lot better.
