I still rather like this one. Sure, the parts with vocals are a little off, but the jam is pretty good, and I like the outro as well.

I like it too. Hope we get a proper studio take one of these days. I'd go as far to say that what I've heard from Of The Earth it's better than anything off the last two albums.

The official bootlegs and DVD releases don't count?

Interesting to revisit this thread in light of Gigaton and the many fans who were hoping for "Of the Earth" to make the cut. In going back to the Live at Third Man performance with Jack White, it struck me how few lyrics this song has, by which I mean that it's very unlike the new record where Ed's verbosity is on full display. Neither is by definition good or bad to me, it's just different. While the kind of brawny, lumbering quality of the song made me think it would fit, ultimately I don't think it would. "Of the Earth" is the kind of song that to me sounds like a centerpiece for an album to be built around - which makes it clear to me why it wasn't on Avocado despite being one of Ament's favorites (according to the 2005 MTV article) or Backspacer. As the Variety piece also made clear, the band is looking forward and not backward, and this tune's time is long past. Still would love a studio version on a Lost Cats double-disc though.

Of the Earth produced by Josh Evans in the style and tone of Gigaton would have fit swimmingly around the 2/3 point of Gigaton in place of Never Destination

I don't like Of the Earth much, I think, I don't really remember how it went

it's fine. it's definitely one of the better outputs from that era, but frankly i'm not entirely sure that that's saying much.

i do think, however, it's time to let it go. they haven't put it out on a proper album for a reason.

To me it's a song with several interesting parts....but several parts that work against the song. I want to love it but just can't get there.

In retrospect the band should have taken Harmony and built a song around that. That instrumental is explosive and shows how much muscle the band had during those early 2000 years but never really flexed it in the studio.

Harmony is great.

I was never a big of Of the earth, i think its a cool outtake, and im fine with them never releasing the studio version. Also, im sure it will eventually be included in some compilation of sorts.

15/26 of us voted 4 or 5 so far. I'd bet that would be flipped if this was actually on Avocado.

Never Destination is a really fun song, much better than Of the Earth. However, I would love to hear a proper studio version of Of the Earth with Josh behind the controls.

Yea Never Destination is better. This would be near the bottom of Gigaton if it was on there. But still good. Gigaton is amazing.
