it's a nice little uplifting coda on an album that tries to find uplift in dark times and places.
Maybe I'm wrong, so forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I think it's interesting that you find more value and worth in those few seconds than in Red Dot.
I also think it's interesting that you would describe S/T as an album trying to find uplift in dark themes and place, yet you've described Riot Act as defeatist.

I like how that little bit sounds. it's also at the end of the album and the end of the song. I find red dot annoying and it is smack in the middle of the record. My problem with red dot is that I think it sucks, not that it's a bit of filler in the middle of a record.
If Riot Act was not a defeatist record they would have stuck Down and Undone on the album rather than excluding them because they didn't fit the album (which I THINK i read they said). The songs would have sounded different to. I suspect they went into Riot Act intending to make S/T and found they couldn't do it (in terms of the headspace, etc--not a comment on the quality of the songs)

I haven't read what you think you've read, so I can't speak to that. But there other reasons that Down and Undone don't fit the record than defeatism. They left off Other Side too.
Over and over again I come back to Riot Act, and each time I do, I'm amazed that people call it a defeatist record.

I would say Riot Act is earnest, maybe even desperate for hope sometimes, but hardly 'defeatist'. It comes from a place of despair but is looking for a way out, which for me is far more hopeful (and realistic) than a record that's trying to be triumphant and joyful.

fair enough. I'm not sure it ever stops looking, but I do get the feeling (from that album) that it does start to doubt whether or not it is going to find that way out. But you're right--that's not really defeatist.

It probably does doubt from time to time, but it never gives up. Never. There' so much fight in that album.
