Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
At the time I definitely was surprised and thought it better than anything I thought he was capable of. It was a whole album of things he'd only ever barely hinted at in terms of writing. And his playing had come on leaps and bounds.
For something written and recorded so quickly, and not for itself but a bigger picture(meaning the film) it's quite a remarkable record.
Just wish pj had such a quick turnaround time and weren't so precious.
But one guy doing a thing can take zero time. Getting 5 people to agree and a whole organisation to get moving to release promote is another thing I suppose.

While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

Pj should do end of the road sometime, with a crazy jammy outro...and then segue into parting ways with another crazy jammy outro, which might sound redundant but will definitely sound awesome.
And yall are forgetting long nights
.
If there are any ed tunes a la just breathe or the end on the next album I hope they go with a less is more type production rather than the backspacer type production.

Well, we already know that they recorded strings for a few tracks, so... sorry dude, they are going full BS. And you should never go full BS.

They might be tasteful strings....used to add texture and enhance the song rather than turn it into an overblown saccharine mess.......r..right? THERE IS STILL HOPE.
Though the strings are just one part of the 'full BS' problem, maybe they'll tone the other stuff down.

I don't think strings are necessarily a bad thing. They sound great on Parting Ways.

Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
they sound good on the end and the verses of Just Breathe too. And they do make the chorus of Just Breathe over the top, but it's also the effect they're going for there. Even there I'm not sure it's the strings that feel jarring as much as it is how much louder the chorus sounds.

Backspacer suffers from many bad artistic choices. adding strings isn't one of them.

Nah, yo. It added an element of cheesiness to an album that already drifted too far into the 'lets try and make a PJ version of Green Day's American Idiot album' zone.mastaflatch wrote:Backspacer suffers from many bad artistic choices. adding strings isn't one of them.
Strings worked in Parting Ways because of the variety and experimental nature of Binaural, so you the listener was 'primed' to hear something other than Even Flow IV. The string complemented an already great song that added a fuller texture to the music after hearing the sparse uke song Soon Forget. In the case of BS, they are used to supplement EV songs that by themselves don't rise to the quality/level of a 'Pearl Jam' song. I believe "The End" would be a much better song if it had been recorded and released in the style of Footsteps from the Jeremy single, but that doesn't qualify as a post Roskilde Pearl Jam track.

Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
Parting Ways (another simple EV song) doesn't need strings to offset itself from soon forget since it has that rich and textured tones on the guitar which sounds (and feels) very different from the reediness of Soon Forget. And the strings in the End give it a softness and warmth that offsets Force of Nature and is appropriate for the song. without the strings the end is maybe too stark a song. It's coming from a very different emotional place than footsteps.broken iris wrote:Nah, yo. Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
oh, i get that. my own take of it is that strings are a potentially interresting and quite unusual colour to PJ's music. of course, it depends on how they're used and arranged and it also depends if you happen to like the song that uses strings. i just think it's unfair to say that because you think it's been cheesy on BS it's gonna be cheesy again next time. several guitar parts in PJ sound cheesy or poorly thought out to me but shit happens, i'm not gonna call for a guitar ban in the future.broken iris wrote:Nah, yo. Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
The strings on "Parting Ways" seemed more like a local/a very PJ way of doing things - call up a couple locals (including Matt's wife) and having them do their thing.
On Backspacer, they hired this guy for the string arrangement. Nothing wrong with being more professional, just at odds with the vision of PJ I have in my head. (Yes, yes, there were strings on Ten.)
You know what's cheesy? The keyboard bridge on "The Fixer." I'd like to blame Boom, but I'm not positive he recorded that.

The piano on UK is also very cheesy in my opinion. Cheeiser than any strings on the whole album.nomorecrackpipes wrote:The strings on "Parting Ways" seemed more like a local/a very PJ way of doing things - call up a couple locals (including Matt's wife) and having them do their thing.

I remember when a lot of people were very exited O'Brien was producing BS...until they heard the results.
I think Pearl Jam is ok producing the artistic side of things themselves. Meaning they can handle the songwriting and arangements without the need of outside help. Now when it comes to the mixing and mastering side of things that's where they need help from a decent producer.

If BO'B produces a significantly better sounding album that BS, then I'll fully accept that Backspacer was an experiment. If he delivers something similar, it'll just reaffirm my concern of returning to him

I like both of those elements. They're uplifting. Very U2ish, but they are those kinds of songs.

And then we get to wait another 6 years for something else to ruin our PJ hopes!
