If you follow the link Strat posted, you'll see they just used the basic drums/bass/rhythm guitar tracks, and then added other stuff in the studio.
And I know that article says that, but I do feel they stuck witht he vocal take as well but added background vocals. I haven't listened to the atlanta version in awhile but i believe mikes lead is the same as well.
That's my recollection too.

I'd just like to add that I'm a huge fan of what mikejasond has been doing in here lately.

His opinions are deeply unfathomable but he's certainly livened up PJ Chat.

The change to slow down the first verse was a brilliant choice. That really makes it.

Listening to this I just don't hear it....you guys have got to show me that overlay to prove it to me.

This does not sound nearly as good as the studio version, so if the parts were taken from here, they were severely touched up and other stuff added. Eddie keeps going out of tune live (Or the guitars are) and this is not happening in the studio version. On the second chorus, the second "can't" does not seem to be the same note to me at all.

Maybe they took some parts from here....The end does sound like it could be. Its crazy how much better he sounds on the studio version though than this live boot. I dunno what crazy recording technology they're using to get it and smooth out all his rough edges.

The article does say things were taken from live performances, but doesnt say how much. The studio version sounds so much better.

This also makes me think the problem live is Stone again, because the out of tune-ness could be him screwing up if the studio version shows that it's not Eddie. Because seriously the live version is much rougher than the studio and that has to be because of somebody or they didn't use all of Eddie's vocals or somehow smoothed them.

I don't know what it is that you repeatedly hear as a guitar being out of tune but I have my doubts that it's really an issue with the tuning.

mmikejasd, they dont just grab the live track and tack it on and toss it onto the album. There is an entire process of mixing, and mastering, and making the tracks blend, and sound certain ways.

I think its constant tuning issues, I don't know what else it could be. But there's a weird dissonance listening to the live version that is not present in the studio as if something is slightly off. It's either Eddie or it's the guitars.

Two unpleasing things I hear in the Matt-era live versions are the overly-distorted guitars and the heavy drums. I wonder if the guitar distortion is what you're thinking of as being out of tune?
I think it probably is, I also always complain about the guitar distortion. But this Better Man is from the Dave A days. If the vocals are the ones from the studio and thus are in tune, then I have to imagine the weird dissonance that occasionally pops up is from the guitar

It says exactly how much. The drums, bass and electric guitar. From mid-way thru the 2nd verse to the end.

That page is lifted form the PJ20 book.

Each source mixed down to mono and then at the 1:57 mark they're each panned 75% in opposite directions so you can compare. Atlanta 94 on the left and Vitalogy on the right.
