Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I'm not as deep into the Coen filmography as I'd like to be, but TBL has always held a special spot for me. It's so textually rich, it's hilarious from start to finish, and I think I watched it for the first time at just the right time. I think some of their other characters are better written, some of their stories have more of an intimate or epic feel, and they've gotten better performances out of some actors, but I'll never back down from TBL.

As far as bowling movies from the 90s go, Kingpin is better.

I've only ever watched like 20% of Kingpin; it'll go on my watch list.

Watched Blue Ruin today and highly recommend it. I'm digging that I've come across so many 90 minute movies that I want to watch.

There's a lot of really wonderful, inspired, artful stuff going on in the fringes of indie cinema all over the world (I'd hesitate to comment on those two particular movies, as I haven't seen Blue Ruin and was ambivalent about It Follows; I generally don't like horror movies that look like M83 music videos). What I have a problem with, and what I think we were discussing in Tiny the other night, is the introspective "fake-indie" mid-tier mainstream movies like This is Where I Leave You, Skeleton Twins, etc that started crowding the market after Garden State.
