I never watch Refn trailers, but I'm tempted.

Yeah, that trailer is unbelievable. That looks out. standing. Sexy. Haunting. Creepy. Gorgeous.

Great cast. Looks, on the surface, though I'm sure it's not really true, like an alien hybrid of Mulholland Drive and Black Swan. But, you know, bloodier.

:nice:

It didn't scare me but it gave me the same exact tension in my chest that I get when I watch David Lynch at his best. Black Swan had a similar, though less intense, effect on me when that trailer first came out. But yeah, I want to see this the worst possible way. I'm officially excited for this thing. This looks unbelievable.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. It got booed, like Only God Forgives. One article said "The jaw-dropping depravity of The Neon Demon leaves Cannes reeling." It's all stuff like that, mostly negative. Which makes me so happy.

Me too. I think he's pretty untouchable when it comes to contemporary directors.

I love divisive directors. And I'm still really excited to see this one. Even if I haven't necessarily loved his stuff in the past. This one looks like it's really going to speak to me.

I still think it looks amazing, but the one review I mentioned made it sound very stylized without any heart. I hope it's not like The Canyons of The Bling Ring or something. Hoping for more "Drive + American Psycho + Devil Wears Prada," but that's an oversimplification of what I know this guy can do.
People say this about every movie he's ever made. I wouldn't worry about it if you've liked any of his other stuff.

This line has me intrigued enough to see it:

When the film reaches its logical end point, Refn just keeps pushing, and eventually lands on a sequence so jaw-dropping – almost certainly a sly, glossy-magazine refashioning of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali’s groundbreaking surrealist short Un Chien Andalou – that all you can do is howl or cheer.

I can understand that criticism for Only God Forgives, maybe. But certainly not Drive. It's stylized but it has a ton of heart. Mostly thanks to the geniuses Gosling and Mulligan.
