Weird, non sensical, long but full of the visual impact of the goddamn genius Renny Harlin at his prime...and Geena Davis. Man, i miss her. Oh and Sam Jackson doing pretty much the same character of Die Hard With A Vengeance.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

He was great in those indie side-man characters, like in Jungle Fever or Fresh. Seems like he's more interested in chewing up the scenery and cashing big paychecks these days.

There are hardly any movies like The Long Kiss Goodnight anymore. I mean, its not even a good movie, but you can feel is something else there.

With the action genre in particular, I think there was like a 4-staged development from when I was a kid:

1. The Schwarzenegger/Stallone over-the-top actions flicks of the 80s.

2. The Tarantino-inspired 90s action flicks, where suddenly all the bad guys had great dialogue and were sort of likable.

3. The Guy Ritchie/Paul Greengrass super-fast action sequences that pitted ordinary good guys against super strong bad guys in what looked like an MTV clip; and the bullet-time stuff from The Matrix.

4. Everything we have now, which is a super-hyped descendent of #3, but without interesting characters or a good story.

I don't think it's anything as specific as that, really. It's just that action movies are often no longer approached as coherent, satisfying cinematic experiences with pacing and characters and visuals and structure, but as a loosely-linked concession of chaotically-edited set-pieces that are built around "Oh shit!" moments (see John Wick, The Raid, ad infinitum). The value of action movies as pleasurable, well-crafted cinema has been degraded, by critics as much as audiences, to the point where the majority of them are barely recognizable as movies anymore.
