Re: What movies are you watching?
The Social Network was an interesting movie to watch. I can clearly, clearly remember when the Facebook craze swept through my college (I was a sophomore, the same age as basically everyone portrayed in the movie), and while I think they basically hit all of the main points why FB was "cool" and how much cache it had--you could see who lived in your building, who was taking classes with you next semester, and you could stalk a girl you met at the bar at 3:00AM (stalking hasn't been the same since they introduced privacy features)--but if the film's being watched in 50 years, I think what really hit as feeling true were the sexual expectations/fantasies/insecurities of early-2000s masculinity. I'd like to do some more thinkin' on it, because it hit me way more than anything else.
I also re-watched Zodiac over the past few days. I had really fond memories of this one (saw it originally 7-8 years ago), and I still think it's good, but it didn't really strike me the same way this time. Hard to put my finger on it, but maybe it's because I've basically memorized the details of the Zodiac case up to this point--nothing was a surprise. The first time I watched it, I was falling out of my chair during certain scenes (especially in the basement).

The Nice Guys has just the right amount of humor to mask some of slower pacing/contrived story elements. It doesn't dwell too much on the fact that it is set in the 70s, rather just letting the set pieces tell that story for the most part. I really enjoyed it and didn't realize how long of a movie it ended up being.
