There was some kind of backstage shenanigans going on but I've never been very clear on it.

Maybe. I thought it was Roddenberry and the Producers who didn't like the direction the character was moving in, they chose to replace her. Patrick Stewart was pissed. They realized their mistake and brought her back for S2.

By Studio I meant Producers.

Maybe. I thought it was Roddenberry and the Producers who didn't like the direction the character was moving in, they chose to replace her. Patrick Stewart was pissed. They realized their mistake and brought her back for S2.

Another explanation arises from an April/May 1994 story published in Star Trek the Official Fan Club Magazine. The story claims that McFadden attempted to renegotiate her contract at the end of The Next Generation’s first season. Although this may be a reasonable ploy for an actor on a hit series, Paramount refused to meet her demands and removed her from the program. The article also claims that when McFadden returned to Star Trek, it was at a lower salary than the rest of her co-stars.

They tried to set Pulaski up as Bones to Data's Spock. There were a few episodes were it worked.

You think so? I always found her insufferably shrill, almost mean, even. Icy. Bones had a red-blooded passion and warmth that made him endearing.

That's actually interesting, now that I think about it: Data never had any great foil on the crew like Spock did with Bones because of Roddenberry's mandate that no one be hot-headed or adversarial.

The character wasn't anywhere as good as Bones but I think that was the intention...and yes she was really mean to Data.
