heh, I never noticed that. I occasionally watch eps on FXX too. Any examples of some scenes they've cut out?
The one that I couldn't believe that I noticed the other day was in the Treehouse of Horror segment where they run over Ned Flanders on his fogwalk. In the unedited version, Homer sings the "Can't get enough of that Sugar Crisp" jingle. Then, Marge asks him if he put the foglights in, and he sings "Guess I forgot to put the foglights in" in the same melody. I fucking love that joke; the foglights jingle is one of my most-quoted Simpsons lines.

The edited version omits the Sugar Crisp jingle, so he just sings the foglights line while eating cereal with no context. It's a confounding edit.

Wow. That is so bizarre and so lame. That's a classic bit too. Do they seriously have a hard time budgeting commercial time in or something?

Yeah, it seems like it. And if I'm not mistaken, the edits are getting more severe over time. They seem to be gradually chipping away at the episodes more and more.

Shows in syndication are often sped up, too. Check out this side-by-side of Seinfeld:

Another awful edit: Originally, in "The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace", after Homer drones on about Thomas Edison to the bar patrons, Carl says something about a different inventor. Homer immediately says "That's boring. You're boring everybody. Quit boring everyone."

In the edited version, they cut to the next scene immediately after Homer first says "That's boring," omitting the last two lines. :shake:

There used to be a Simpsons/Seinfeld rerun block around 7pm sometime around 2002. Lost many hours and a good amount of brain cells to that block of programming.
And then you could switch to the new hampshire channel for more Simpsons.

We have a 5-hour "golden age" Simpsons marathon on an Argentine TV channel every Saturday afternoon. It is glorious.

So, its in Spanish? I assume you've watched it in both languages. Just curious if the jokes still come across the same.

I switch over to the English audio because I'm more used to it now, but I'll also sometimes watch it in Spanish for the sheer nostalgia of it (that's the version of the show I grew up watching).

The Simpsons is interesting in that the Spanish dub has its own set of jokes that they use in place of the ones that don't translate well (which is a lot of them, considering the amount of wordplay and American pop culture gags). Instead of awkwardly trying for a literal translation-- which is what most dubbed shows end up doing-- they replace the joke with something different that does work. It's almost like watching a different show at times.

I never thought I'd be able to do this, but all this Simpsons talk has made me try.

My Top 20 Episodes:

22 Short Films About Springfield
Bart on the Road
Bart Sells His Soul
Bart's Comet
Beyond Blunderdome
Das Bus
Homer the Heretic
Homer the Smithers
Homer to the Max
Homer vs. Lisa and the Eighth Commandment
Homer's Phobia
Homerpalooza
Lemon of Troy
The Mansion Family
Maximum Homerdrive
Mountain of Madness
Much Apu About Nothing
Skinner's Sense of Snow
When You Dish Upon a Star
You Only Move Twice

I think that's pretty accurate, though obviously this is a difficult task.

That's cool. Do you now prefer the English audio? Its interesting that you were acostomed to a much different set of iconic character voices, which plays a huge part in this show.

I now prefer the English audio, yes. I started watching it in English when I was about 19.

It's funny because sometimes I'll post an English-language Simpsons clip on Facebook and some Argentine friend will inevitably comment on how much funnier it is in Spanish. It is a bit jarring to hear such a different voice when you grew up hearing "Homero" speak.

platy, is the spanish language either spoken faster or have more words in it than English does. Listening to something in Spanish always feels slightly accelerated to me, but it may just be my unfamiliarity with the language.

I won't be voting in any of these match ups because I couldn't name you any Simpsons episode. But I'll stick around and comment from time to time and try not to be too pissed there's no Tom Waits tournament.
