If I ever got to ask the band a question in an interview I would love to know how the proliferation of side projects impacts the band. Are the side projects a response to an inactive pearl jam? Or does it reflect poor scheduling and/or a desire to not step on other people's toes. Do these feed off each other?

i.e.--they lose matt for a while for soundgarden, so eddie releases his uke album and prepares to go on tour. Matt is back but eddie got hurt so he has to delay his tour. While that is happening Stone records some stuff. Eddie is good to go but do they pull the plug on whatever stone is doing. Pearl jam is more important, but who is going to be the dick who says 'you don't get to do your solo thing because everyone else is ready to go.'

I'd like to hope it is that.
I don't know about this; to use Jeff as an example (simply because he seems to, overall, be the guy working the most)...he gets tired of PJ sitting on its' ass for the third year running and gets some stuff together to work on. If I was him, I'm not sure how kindly I'd take to being told that that has to shut down cause the other four members of the band finally got their act together. And even though I'd prefer more PJ, I think he'd be perfectly justified in saying no way to that idea.

Aren't we agreeing with each other here?
Unless I'm reading wrong (very possible), I don't think Jeff or whoever should be in a position where they have to drop whatever they're doing, something that they may be inspired by, because it took Pearl Jam so long to get off its' ass. Selfishly, I guess I'd want that to happen because none of the side projects have really bowled me over, but looking at it from any individual member of the band's perspective, I'd be pretty pissed if I was expected to curtail what I was doing because everyone else decided to stop being lazy.
that was my point (I apologize if it wasn't clear). I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons why this took so long was because of people starting these projects during downtime and the side projects getting in the way of everyone working on pearl jam because no one really wants to say 'stop doing your own thing' right now.

I'm sure they do have that respect for each other. At the same time I would hope they would get excited and be willing to shelve those projects to work together as Pearl Jam. After 20+ years I'm sure it's a struggle, especially considering there has always been tension within the group to some degree or another.

I remember Jeff stating in a recent interview that he'd be fine with RNDM being his band for the year but If pj got things going he'd drop everything for them cause that's his band. His baby

I'm with Spector here. Bayleaf is OK but it's brought up every time someone says that the side projects leave something to be desired. Bayleaf is one album, hardly the majority of PJ's side project output.

Very true.

Here are a few side projects I would rank above at least one Pearl Jam album (INPO):
Bayleaf
Moonlander
Into The Wild
Uke Songs
Scrolls and Its Combinations
Mad Season

I'd also include Temple of the Dog on that list, if we think that technically counts (though, I'm not sure it should). Also, I've never heard anything by Brad, Tre Mts or RNDM. Scrolls is also the only Wellwater Conspiracy album I've heard.

I really like the Three Fish album, but wouldn't rank it above any Pearl Jam album. Though, I certainly think it qualifies as "good." And A(TONE)ment is okay. I haven't heard Jeff's second solo album.

Anyway, I think a lot of their side stuff deserves to be branded good. Bayleaf happens to be great.

Scratch Mad Season from that list and I totally agree. That album just doesn't do much for me anymore.

If it isn't legit it was pretty well crafted . maybe a bit too obvious with the water/nature references.

Over / under on Foliage being Billy Billy Micropenis retitled?

I don't listen to Mad Season as often, true. It's fallen off a bit as I've aged. I don't really need it anymore. But I still think the songs (worn on them as I've become) are interesting and good enough that, were I to be totally objective, I'd still rank it above some of PJ's work.

I'm not understanding why some of you think Backspacer is an experimental record? I view it the same was as they went into recording Yield: they decided ahead of time they wanted to do a more conventional/pop rock album, told Brendan, then they executed (see the passage in the PJ20 book).

The man that crafts the best pop/rock songs? Eddie. Most of the songs are all Ed stuff and I recall in an interview Jeff saying to Ed: "I really liked Into the Wild, you should do stuff like that for PJ." Voila. Backspacer. The only stuff "experimental" is the stuff most similar to Into the Wild, which never appeared on a PJ record before.
