I couldn't disagree with you more. I vastly prefer the passive enjoyment of this type of tournament, and I think it generates more interesting discussion. The other kind is too stressful for my taste, for many of the same reasons you like it. Also, they always seem utterly pointless in the end. Through tournaments like this, I (am often surprised to) learn which episodes/songs/whatever others like and why, and a consensus favorite is named, whereas in the other kind we wind up with a pointless victor that no one cares about.

The tournaments I like require the participants to actively pick their favorite episodes when assembling their teams, whereas this other type of tournament is based on anonymous voting, where you could chime in on the thread but you don't have to. It seems to me the former is a lot more conducive to rediscovery and discussion. Of course they're both completely pointless in the end.
