His schtick makes reading him impossible. Plus, when I do read him, he strikes me as a diluted Kael/White, who makes (what seem to me) really basic and obvious points in drawn out, lowest-com-denom-catering ways without ever veering into the deep insight that makes the other two so potent.

He is very much involved in everything in the movie...from the scrip to the designs of the characters...everything.
I saw the new one and i actually enjoyed it.
Really? Fascinating. Why hire outside directors if he's gonna be so involved, even down to character design? Either way... I don't plan on seeing the movies. Maybe I will eventually. But I certainly won't make any real effort to do so.
Presumably because he doesn't have to be on set daily. He can design the overall look and feel of the movie, watch the dailies from the back of his limo, and make adjustments from wherever it is he goes to pay homage to the dark overlords who have granted him his powers.
He can do all of that as a director, too. Especially as "Executive Producer."
An EP credit is usually given to people who bankroll the film, or otherwise support the project without any creative input.
If he were a director, he's be expected to be on location every day, unless he has a gaggle of Second Unit directors doing all the heavy lifting, which is certainly possible but not likely.
Bankrolling, you mean, like the guy who owns the production company making the movie?

I know how it works man. I'm just saying. At this point, with his name, he could collect both credits and be away from set as much as he wanted. It happens all the time. Especially on this money-grab properties.

Just seems weird to want massive amounts of control and input, as someone who is a director, and not also want to direct. Or take credit for directing. Seems much more likely to me that Bay isn't all that involved in any aspect. But if VG is right, and I don't have any reason to doubt him, it's fucking weird. That's all I'm saying.
There is a Rolling Stone article about Bay going to see Krang's design and the vfx of the movie and he is making all the decisions. My guess is that he doesnt want to direct another big franchise...and with this sequel, i guess he could not be present on shooting, pre production, rehearsals, because of his own movie.
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.

It's not really weird. Bay wants some big picture control over it and doesn't really care about a director credit, so he gets the fat Executive Producer credit and hires someone else to do the day to day directing. And think of it from the directors point of view. Would you want to direct if someone else takes the credit?

To be fair, Bay's versions don't look any more off-book than every other interpretation of the original comic (I maintain that the original film did a fair job of capturing the gritty tone). And all the pizza, cowabunga, etc that was a hallmark of the 80s cartoon was developed with Laird & Hamilton closely involved.

I hate Michael Bay movies, but I think he's perfectly suited to the TMNT franchise. Of course I haven't actually seen either of his two films.
Hamilton? Really? It's Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. Laird and Eastman were not closely involved with the Original Toon (OT), here's a quote from Laird himself. “…had I (again, speaking solely for myself and not for Kevin) been making the key creative decisions for that first animated series, it would have been VERY different. Among other things, there would likely have been no moronic henchmen like Bebop and Rocksteady. The Shredder would have been seriously malevolent. April would not have been a reporter and constantly need to be rescued by the Turtles. The Turtles would not have been so ridiculously obsessed with pizza, and the Shredder would not have had as one of his businesses a restaurant called ‘Ninja Pizza’…And the show would not have had a joke or gag every five seconds.” From Wikipedia, "Laird had minimal hands-on involvement in the development of the original animated series....."

These movies take out everything compelling about 4 ninja turtles and their rat master. TMNT is a story about the cyclical nature of vengeance and dealing with being a part of that cycle and dealing with it as a family.
There's almost zero history/relationship between Splinter and Shredder in these movies, which is the entire basis for the Turtles' fight with the Foot Clan.

The Turtles are huge and way too strong, they're also fucking bulletproof. Rendering any threat pointless besides the most ridiculous and over-the-top. Any hope for actual ninja style fighting in a movie about ninjas is gone. There's zero subtlety. Ninja Turtles are supposed to be a fair amount smaller than the average human, making 'em huge and super strong renders the ninja aspect pointless, what's a throwing star going to do when a bullet does nothing?

Every kids Turtles' cartoon has a more sophisticated and meaningful origin than these new Bay Turtles. The people making the movie literally said all that stuff would be too complicated. From the director of the first Bay Turtles, "The problem is, it becomes very complicated. People who aren’t fans will just be like, ‘What the f– is going on?’ It’s just that then you start opening a whole bunch of doors that became very complex to explore in this film.”

These new movies could have been a straight adaption of the first season of the OT, and they could have rocked. That first season (5 eps) is really damn good, and not anywhere as goofy.

In a world where great comic book movies have become a thing, it really sucks that this is what TMNT fans are getting, a bloated, obnoxious, nostalgia money-grab, crammed with as much shit as possible to sell tickets. It's like they're saying, "WE GOT ROCKSTEADY, BEBOP, KRANG, SHREDDER, BAXTER STOCKMAN, THE TECHNODROME, KARAI, CASEY JONES (LOOK IT'S THE GUY FROM ARROW, AND HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HE DOES ON ARROW), REVERSE MUTAGEN, APRIL'S SUPER HOT. HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THIS MOVIE? IT'S GOT EVERYTHING!!"

Oh yea, and all the stupid ass gear on the Turtles, my god, as if we didn't know Donatello is the smart one and Mikey's the goofy surfer-dude, they had to put glasses and a fucking ghostbusters backpack on the back of Donatello, and pooka shells and sunglasses around Mikey's neck. This shit is so stupid.

Splinter learns ninjutsu from a book?! Really?! I could continue to rant, but there's no point. I'm a big fan of TMNT, especially comic book TMNT, and seeing it get treated as just a dumb and stupid kids' movie/property breaks my heart. I'll just end this with a quote from Michelangelo in the first Bay Turtles that I think represents everything wrong with these movies.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Yes, from the first one. When they first meet April.
